Chapter 7

"You’re poking into things that don't concern your paycheck, Arthur," Marcus said, his tone conversational despite the standoff. "The Vance family pays for discretion, not heroism." Arthur took a deliberate step forward, keeping the flashlight beam blindingly level with Marcus's face. "Discretion is one thing, Marcus, but accessory to kidnapping and attempted murder crosses a federal line I'm not willing to ignore," Arthur replied, his thumb brushing against the secure recording device in his pocket. He knew Marcus was stalling, likely waiting for backup or trying to talk his way out of a corner.

Instead of lunging, Marcus unexpectedly laughed—a dry, humorless sound that echoed off the damp stone walls. "You think you have the high ground, don't you? You think you found the smoking gun on that little digital recorder." Marcus took a slow step to the side, leaning casually against a stone pillar. "Vivienne knows every move you make, Arthur. She authorized your hiring specifically because she knew you were thorough enough to find anomalies. She wanted a controlled containment system." Arthur’s stomach tightened; the manipulation ran deeper than he had ever imagined.

Inside the locked room, Clara heard the muffled voices echoing through the heavy oak. Recognizing Arthur’s voice, a surge of desperate hope pierced the suffocating darkness. She scrambled toward the door, slamming her palms against the wood. "Arthur! I'm in here! Open the door!" she screamed, abandoning her previous restraint as adrenaline flooded her system. The sound of Clara’s voice shattered the tense standoff in the hallway. Marcus lunged forward with sudden, explosive violence, tackling Arthur before the security consultant could bring his tactical light up as a defense tool.

The two men crashed hard against the stone wall, the flashlight clattering away into the shadows and plunging the corridor into near-total darkness. Arthur grunted as the wind was knocked out of him, but his military training kicked in automatically. He hooked his leg behind Marcus’s knee, leveraging his weight to send both of them tumbling sideways. They traded heavy, silent blows in the dirt and dust, each fighting for absolute dominance in the suffocating subterranean chill. Arthur managed to pin Marcus’s arm behind his back, pressing his knee firmly into the man's spine until Marcus went limp with a hiss of pain.
