Chapter 2 - Shadows on the Balcony

Julian whipped around, his eyes scanning the cavernous heights of the grand mezzanine. The balcony was draped in heavy velvet curtains, casting deep shadows against the gilded plaster arches. For a fleeting second, the silhouette of a tall figure leaned over the marble balustrade, the unmistakable silver wolf handle catching the warm light of the crystal chandelier. But before Julian could blink, the figure retreated into the darkness.
"Julian, look at me!" Victoria snapped, stepping directly into his line of sight. Her eyes burned with desperation, her porcelain skin flushed with sudden panic. "You are embarrassing our families. Hundreds of investors and ambassadors are watching! Turn around, say it was a misunderstanding, and let’s cut the cake."
"Did you see him?" Julian demanded, gripping her wrists. His tone was devoid of affection, replaced entirely by cold realization. "Victoria, look at the balcony. Did you see who was standing there?"
"There is no one there! You're losing your mind over a staged trick!" she argued, pulling her arms away with sudden ferocity. "She is a nobody. A catering temp hired from an agency!"
Julian turned back to the girl, whose chest heaved with quiet sobs. He knelt down beside her, ignoring the mess of crushed berries and spilled cream soaking into his tailored trousers. "What is your name?"
"Lyra," she whispered, her voice fragile. "I grew up as Lyra Vance. But the papers in the hospice envelope... they had another name written on the back of the baptism record."
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. "Clara," he whispered.
Lyra’s eyes widened in stunned silence. She didn't need to answer; her expression confirmed the unspeakable truth.
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor. Four armed private guards, dressed in all-black tactical uniforms bearing the crest of Victoria's family—the Vance-Sterling Syndicate—marched aggressively through the parted crowd. They were not hotel security. They were Victoria’s personal mercenaries.
"Escort this intruder to the lower level holding room immediately," Victoria ordered coldly, waving her hand without looking at Lyra. "She is trespassing on private corporate grounds."
"Stand down!" Julian roared, rising to his full height. He placed himself directly between the guards and Lyra. The authoritative cadence of his voice cut through the stunned silence of the ballroom. "Touch her, and I will have every one of you stripped of your licenses by morning."
The lead guard hesitated, glancing nervously toward Victoria for confirmation. Victoria’s face hardened into a mask of pure venom.

"Julian, you think you’re protecting a victim," Victoria murmured, leaning close to his ear, her voice dropping to a sinister hiss. "You have no idea what your family did twenty years ago. If you let her speak, you will destroy everything we own."
Before Julian could answer, the ballroom lights violently flickered and plunged into pitch-black darkness. A sharp gasp rippled through the guests, followed by the deafening sound of shattering glass from the ballroom skylight.
