Chapter 11 - The Tide Turns

For the first time since the disaster began in the ballroom, Victoria’s composed expression fractured into pure, unadulterated panic. Her hand holding the silver umbrella tightened so violently that the knuckles turned white.
"Shoot them!" Victoria shrieked, dropping all pretense of elegance. "Shoot them both right now!"
Before the mercenaries could squeeze their triggers, the night sky was torn open by the deafening roar of twin turboshaft engines. Two massive naval helicopters with blinding white searchlights banked sharply over the harbor, illuminating the entire wharf in brilliant, unforgiving daylight.
*"Attention all personnel on Pier 42,"* a booming voice echoed from the lead helicopter's loudspeaker. "This is the Federal Special Investigations Directorate. Lower your weapons and step away from the vehicles immediately. You are surrounded by federal jurisdiction."
Sirens—not the local police sirens Victoria controlled, but the heavy, low-frequency wails of federal tactical units—roared from the access highway, cutting off all avenues of escape. Armored assault carriers smashed through the security gates of the port, deploying dozens of federal tactical agents in full combat gear.
Victoria's private mercenaries immediately recognized the insignias. Realizing their employer had lost all political leverage in an instant, the lead contractor lowered his weapon and ordered his men to drop their arms to the wet asphalt.
"What are you doing?!" Victoria screamed, spinning on her men. "I am paying you millions! Kill them!"
"Contract is void under federal intervention, ma'am," the contractor replied coldly, dropping his rifle and raising his hands above his head.
Julian stepped forward through the blinding glare of the spotlights. The rain beat down on his face, washing away the grime and soot. He looked down at the woman he was supposed to have married just hours ago.
"It's over, Victoria," Julian said quietly.
Federal agents swarmed the dock, pinning Victoria’s security detail to the ground. A tall woman in a dark federal windbreaker marched directly toward Victoria, producing a set of steel handcuffs.
"Victoria Vance-Sterling," the agent announced, reading from a tablet. "You are under arrest for treason, corporate espionage, conspiracy to commit murder, and the unlawful trafficking of restricted military materials."
As the cold steel snapped around Victoria’s wrists, she looked at Julian with unbridled venom. "You think you won?" she whispered maliciously. "You have no idea who backed my family. The Sterling Group was just a subsidiary, Julian. The men who actually ordered your sister's death twenty years ago aren't in this city. They're waiting in the capital."
Before Julian could demand an answer, Victoria was shoved into the back of an armored transport vehicle.
Marcus limped up beside Julian, clutching his wounded shoulder with a grim smile. "We survived the night, boss."

Julian turned to Lyra, who stood under the blinding searchlights, staring at the sunrise beginning to crest over the ocean horizon. For the first time in her life, she had a name, a family, and a truth.
"Now," Julian said, his voice hardened with new purpose, "we take back our family."
