Chapter 6 - Safe House Protocol

By 6:00 AM, the administrative wing of the 4th Precinct had been converted into a command post. Detective Frank Vance sat at the head of the conference table, rubbing bloodshot eyes over satellite maps of the county's timberland. Infant Brad had been transferred under heavy police guard to an undisclosed military medical facility thirty miles north. Elena remained under Mateo’s protective custody, wrapped in a fresh police fleece blanket on a leather sofa in the chief’s office.

"Cole survived the drop," Vance stated bluntly, tapping a pen against an aerial photo of the old railway junction. "Security cameras caught him stealing an unmarked transport van two blocks from the hospital. He’s wounded, bleeding heavily, but he’s mobile. And he isn't working alone."

"What did he mean by 'that boy's blood is proof'?" Mateo demanded, slamming a thick folder onto the mahogany table. "Dr. Chen found trace synthetics in the cord blood. It wasn't an overdose; it was metabolic. The mother was being used as an incubator for an experimental chemical precursor."

Vance’s face hardened. He stood up and pulled the vertical blinds shut, casting the room in dim shadows. "The chemical is called Project Eidolon. Developed under a black-budget defense contract before being buried five years ago. It binds with maternal proteins. It can only be stabilized inside a living biological system during late-stage gestation."

Mateo felt the air leave his lungs. "You're saying they bred that child as a container."

"The father was an operative who went rogue with the chemical samples three years ago," Vance revealed quietly. "Elena’s mother harbored him. When the syndicate discovered where they were hiding, the father vanished, leaving the mother and the unborn child behind to be harvested. Cole was sent to collect the final sample—the baby's blood before the antibodies clear his system at seventy-two hours."

"Which means," Mateo realized with sudden dread, "they only have twenty-four hours left before the chemical degrades permanently."

Behind them, Elena walked into the room, clutching a worn piece of paper she had pulled from the inner lining of her ragged sweater. "My mother gave me this," she whispered, handing it to Mateo. "She said if the police couldn't stop them, I had to give this to the man named Vance."

Mateo glanced down. It was a photograph of Detective Frank Vance standing beside Cole in military fatigues ten years ago.
