Chapter 12 - Highway of Shadows

The battered four-wheel-drive pickup truck Vance had stashed in the maintenance yard tore through the chain-link perimeter fence, its tires screaming as it hit the wet asphalt of Route 9. Cold rain hammered the windshield, the wipers struggling to clear the torrent. Mateo drove, his knuckles white on the steering wheel, while Vance sat in the passenger seat reloading magazines from an ammo crate. Elena was tucked on the floorboards of the rear cab, buried beneath a canvas tarp for protection.
"The military facility at Fort Meade isn't a hospital," Vance said, checking the chamber of his sidearm. "It’s a contract research depot leased to the pharmaceutical syndicate. When they brought Brad in under the guise of pediatric emergency care, they delivered him straight into the lion's den."
"How much time does the baby have?" Mateo asked, weaving through late-night commercial transport trucks.
"The synthetic proteins in his cord blood begin breaking down forty-eight hours after birth," Vance replied grimly. "That was six hours ago. Once the chemical degrades, it turns toxic. If they don't extract the stabilized compound and synthesize the antidote within the next two hours, the baby's liver will fail completely."
"They're going to kill him during the extraction," Mateo realized, the speedometer needle creeping past ninety miles per hour.
"They won't care. Once they get the stabilized culture and decrypt it with Elena’s scan, they can manufacture synthetic batches indefinitely. The children are just biological packaging to them."
Suddenly, the rear glass of the pickup shattered with a concussive crash.
A heavy black pursuit SUV rammed their rear bumper, the impact throwing the truck sideways across the slick lanes. Mateo wrestled the steering wheel, fighting the skid as the tires shrieked against the wet median. In the rearview mirror, he saw Cole leaning out of the SUV’s passenger window, his scarred face twisted into a maniacal grin beneath the highway lights, aiming a heavy tear-gas launcher directly at their rear tires.

"Brace!" Mateo yelled, slamming the brakes to force the pursuit vehicle to overshoot them.
