Chapter 14 - The Fortress Gate

"Back! Get back!" Mateo roared, sprinting toward the pickup truck as he dove across the asphalt.
The grenade detonated behind him, the shockwave shattering what remained of the bridge lights and throwing a fireball into the rain-swept river below. The bridge trembled, but the concrete held. Mateo scrambled into the truck cab, bleeding from minor shrapnel cuts across his back, and slammed the door shut.
"Go!" he gasped to Vance. "He destroyed the drive! The only key left is inside Elena!"
Vance hit the gas, leaving the burning wreckage behind as they crossed the river into the dense pine forests surrounding Fort Meade. Fifteen minutes later, the compound loomed through the trees—a sprawling complex of concrete bunkers, razor-wire fences, and high-intensity sodium floodlights. Two heavily armed private security guards manned the reinforced steel security gate.
"How do we get through?" Vance asked, slowing down as they approached the checkpoint. "They have anti-vehicle barriers."
Mateo looked into the rear seat. Elena had crawled out from under the tarp. Her eyes were completely calm now, devoid of tears. She handed Mateo the radio handset she had found on the truck floor.
"Uncle Mateo," she whispered, her voice carrying an eerie authority. "My father left a frequency code on the back of the locket. He said if men in black uniforms ever cornered us, I had to play this sound."
She opened the silver locket and pressed a tiny bronze notch beneath the photograph. A high-pitched acoustic sequence—a series of rapid, modulated electronic tones—emitted from a microchip hidden within the jewelry.
Mateo keyed the radio mic, broadcasting the acoustic tone across the open emergency channel used by the compound's automated perimeter grid.
Instantly, the floodlights along the perimeter fence shifted from yellow to flashing crimson. The security sirens began to wail: "Warning. Security Protocol Omega initiated. Automated quarantine lockdown active. All exterior gates opening for civilian evacuation."
The heavy steel gates groaned and slid completely open.

"David didn't just hide a decryption key," Mateo realized, a grim smile cutting through his exhaustion. "He left a master kill switch."
