Chapter 11

Inside the diner’s vinyl booth, the smell of fresh coffee and grilled pancakes offered a stark contrast to the sterile, oppressive atmosphere of Arthur's home. Lily sat quietly, sipping a cup of warm cocoa that the kind elderly waitress had brought over, her small hands wrapped around the ceramic mug as if it were a lifeline.

Arthur sat across from her, his eyes glued to the glass doors of the diner, watching for the return of Detective Miller’s cruiser. Every shadow moving across the highway outside made his muscles tense, expecting Elena to appear out of the gloom with her soft voice and calculated smiles.

The bell above the diner door chimed softly, and Detective Miller walked in, shaking the damp mist from his trench coat. He strode directly over to their booth, sliding onto the bench beside Arthur. He didn't smile, but the expression in his eyes was triumphant and grim.

"The toxicology report just cleared the downtown lab printer ten minutes ago," Tom said quietly, sliding a sealed manila envelope across the Formica table. "It matches the ledger page for page, Arthur. High concentrations of lorazepam—a powerful nervous system depressant—found in the milk sample we pulled from her nightstand, as well as in Lily's blood work from yesterday morning."

Arthur exhaled a shaky breath, pressing his hands against his face as the last remaining shreds of doubt evaporated into nothingness. "She was trying to erase us, Tom. Slowly, legally, right out from under our own roof."

"Not anymore," Tom said, pulling a folded document from his coat pocket. "I took this straight to Judge Holloway thirty minutes ago. We have a warrant for Elena Miller’s immediate arrest on charges of aggravated child endangerment, administration of illicit substances, and attempted grand larceny."

"When do we go back?" Arthur asked, looking down at Lily, who was watching them with wide, understanding eyes.

"My deputies are securing the house right now," Tom replied. "We go back with a full team. But Arthur, you and Lily are staying here with a patrol officer until I call you to confirm she's in custody. I don't want you anywhere near that property until the cuffs are securely on her wrists."

Arthur nodded, accepting the wisdom of his friend's command. He reached across the table, taking Lily's small hand in his own. "We're going to be okay, baby," he whispered, offering her a genuine, unburdened smile for the first time in months.

Tom stood up, tipping his hat to them both. "Stay put. I'll call you the second it's done."
