Chapter 10

The old roadside diner on Route 9 was a beacon of fluorescent light against the gray, overcast afternoon sky. Arthur pulled his sedan into an empty gravel space near the front entrance, cutting the engine immediately. He turned around in his seat to check on Lily. Her eyes were heavy with fatigue, but the sheer adrenaline of the escape had kept her conscious.
"We made it, sweetheart," Arthur said softly, unbuckling her seatbelt and pulling her into a gentle hug.
Before he could step out of the car, a marked police cruiser pulled up sharply beside them, its headlights cutting through the gloom. The driver's door opened, and Detective Tom Miller stepped out, adjusting his trench coat against the wind. His face was etched with deep lines of concern as he strode over to Arthur’s door and pulled it open.
"Arthur! Thank God," Tom said, his eyes darting immediately to Lily in the back seat. "You look like you've seen a ghost. Is this her?"
"This is Lily," Arthur said, stepping out onto the gravel and pulling the black leather ledger from his waistband, handing it directly to the detective. "And that book contains everything. Bank fraud, medical records, forged signatures, and the exact schedule of the sedatives Elena has been giving my daughter for months."
Tom flipped the ledger open, his eyes scanning the precise, neat handwriting on the first few pages. As he read, the color drained from his weathered face, replaced by a dark, hardened anger. He looked up at Arthur, closing the cover with a sharp snap.
"This is an open-and-shut case of premeditated poisoning, endangerment, and financial fraud," Tom said firmly, pulling his radio mic from his shoulder. "If half of what's written in here checks out with the toxicology report I'm picking up from the downtown lab right now, we have enough to arrest her tonight."
"She's dangerous, Tom," Arthur warned, gripping his friend's arm. "She isn't going to go quietly. She has connections we don't know about, and she's calculated every single move."

"Let her try," Tom replied grimly. He tapped his radio, barking orders to dispatch for two backup units to secure Arthur’s residence immediately. "Right now, you and Lily are going to get inside this diner, grab some warm food, and stay with my partner until I return with the arrest warrant. I'm taking this ledger as primary evidence."
Arthur nodded, a heavy weight finally lifting from his shoulders. He reached back into the car, scooped Lily into his arms, and carried her through the diner doors into the warmth of the brightly lit restaurant, leaving the nightmare of the pink-lit bedroom behind them at last.
