Chapter 1

The heavy silence of the bedroom pressed against Arthur’s chest as he sat beside the pink-lit bed. Outside, the night wind rattled the windowpanes, but inside, the air was unnaturally still. He kept his palm resting lightly against seven-year-old Lily’s uninjured skin, avoiding the sterile white medical patch taped firmly across her pale forehead. Her dark hair was splayed out on the pillow, damp with a cold sweat that refused to break.
"Princess... how are you feeling?" Arthur asked, his voice barely rising above the hum of the small bedside monitor.
Lily swallowed hard, her small throat working painfully. Before she could answer, the door creaked open. Elena stepped into the warm glow of the room, wearing her dark satin pajamas that caught the pink light like liquid shadow. In her hands, she balanced a wooden tray holding a single glass of white milk and two small pills resting on a napkin.
"Time for your medicine, sweet girl," Elena said, her tone smooth and practiced, carrying an underlying weight that made the hairs on the back of Arthur’s neck stand up.
Arthur stood slowly, taking the glass from the tray. His fingers brushed the smooth, beaded surface of the glass, and a cold shudder ran down his spine. He brought the glass closer to his face, his dark eyes narrowing in the dim light. The milk wasn't just cool; it was refrigerator cold, fresh out of the icebox, completely wrong for someone suffering from a persistent, deep-seated chill.
"Daddy... please tell your wife not to come into my room again," Lily whispered, her voice trembling with a child’s raw, unfiltered dread.
Arthur looked down at the glass, then turned his gaze to his daughter’s small, shaking hand resting on the blanket. He reached out and wrapped his warm fingers around her cold knuckles, grounding himself. Across the room, framed by the doorway, Elena watched them. A subtle, almost imperceptible smile curved the corners of her lips, vanishing as quickly as it had appeared.

"Why is this milk cold?" Arthur asked, his voice tightening with a quiet, restrained fury.
Lily looked up, her dark eyes wide, tearful, and entirely frightened. She gripped the blanket with her free hand, pulling it higher toward her chin. "I don't want her coming in..." she repeated, the fear in her voice cutting through the heavy tension in the room. Arthur set the glass down sharply on the wooden nightstand, the heavy thud breaking the spell of the room, realizing this was only the beginning of a much darker reality.
