Chapter 3: Threshold of the Precinct

The fluorescent lights of the central police precinct hummed softly, casting a sterile white glow over the polished linoleum floors. Unlike the chaotic energy of the school field, the station house offered a quiet, disciplined sanctuary. Maya sat in the waiting area, wrapped securely in a warm wool blanket, sipping a cup of hot chamomile tea that a sympathetic desk sergeant had prepared for her. Her wet clothes had been temporarily replaced by an oversized department-issue windbreaker, and her hair, once tied back in a neat blonde ponytail, was now loose and drying around her shoulders.

Across the room, behind the heavy glass doors of the processing intake area, Jason sat at a metal table. His black t-shirt, which had seemed so imposing on the school grounds, now looked plain and insignificant under the harsh interrogation lights. His parents had not yet arrived, and the absence of adult advocacy seemed to deflate his remaining arrogance.

Captain Miller walked out of his private office holding a thick manila folder. He pulled up a chair and sat directly across from Maya, his expression softening as he observed her quiet resilience.

""How are you holding up, Maya?"" Thomas asked, setting the folder aside.

""I'm still processing everything, Dad,"" Maya admitted, her voice hoarse from crying. ""I didn't want it to become this big. I just... I was just tired of hiding.""

""You never should have had to hide,"" Thomas said firmly, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand. ""I let work distract me. I didn't see how bad it had gotten down on the south field. But we are addressing it now, and we are doing it by the book. Jason’s parents are on their way, and the school principal has already been notified that our cybercrime unit is seizing the servers where those videos were scheduled to be uploaded.""

Maya looked up, her eyes widening. ""They were going to upload it to a public channel?""

""They had a dedicated group chat with over three hundred members,"" Thomas revealed, his jaw tightening slightly. ""And this wasn't their first targeted video. Officer Davies and his team have already recovered three prior incidents from phones we confiscated at the scene. They thought they were clever using encrypted messaging apps, but digital footprints don't just disappear.""

The revelation sent a cold shiver down Maya’s spine. For months, she had wondered why people in the hallways whispered and pointed when she rolled past them. She had assumed it was general gossip about her disability, but the reality was far more malicious—she had been the unwilling star of a digital smear campaign orchestrated by a group of bored teenagers seeking entertainment at her expense.

""What happens to them now?"" Maya asked quietly.

""Juvenile court,"" Thomas answered honestly. ""Given the severity, the digital distribution, and the fact that you sustained physical harm during the commission of the act, the district attorney is considering prosecuting Jason as an adult on felony harassment charges. It’s up to the prosecutor, but the evidence we have is airtight.""

Maya looked through the glass partition toward Jason. He was looking down at his hands, no longer sneering, no longer confident. For the first time, she realized that accountability was not about revenge; it was about safety.
