Chapter 12: The Art of Healing
The regional youth art exhibition was held in the grand gallery of the downtown community center, a brightly lit space featuring works from student artists across the county. The room buzzed with quiet conversation as families, teachers, and local art enthusiasts strolled from display to display, admiring the diverse collection of paintings, sketches, and sculptures.
Maya sat near the center of the gallery in her polished wheelchair, wearing an elegant emerald-green dress. Her architectural sketch of the precinct and oak trees hung proudly on the white exhibition wall, framed in simple dark wood. A small bronze ribbon rested neatly on the corner of the frame—second place in the architectural rendering category.
Captain Miller stood beside her in civilian attire, beaming with paternal pride as several visitors stopped to compliment Maya on her work.
""I still can't believe it placed,"" Maya whispered, her cheeks flushing slightly as an elderly couple stopped to admire the detail in the tree bark.
""Believe it, sweetheart,"" Thomas said, resting a hand gently on her shoulder. ""You poured your heart into that piece. It reflects patience, strength, and incredible talent.""
Chloe walked over, holding a small program booklet and smiling brightly. ""Maya, your piece is gorgeous! Everyone is talking about it over by the refreshment table.""
""Thank you, Chloe,"" Maya replied, her eyes shining with happiness. ""Thanks for convincing me to submit it.""
