Chapter 2: The Weight of Authority

Captain Thomas Miller stood towering over the group of teenagers, his presence casting a long shadow across the muddy school field. The other police officers who had arrived in the backup cruiser stepped out, quietly securing the perimeter to ensure no one attempted to delete footage or scatter from the scene. The smartphones that had been used as weapons of mockery were now clutched nervously in sweaty palms, forgotten in the face of real consequences.
""Hand over the devices,"" Officer Davies commanded, stepping forward with an evidence bag open and ready.
No one moved for a terrifying second. Then, one of the boys standing near the back slowly dropped his phone into the bag, his eyes cast downward. Jason, however, remained rooted to the spot, his face pale. He looked at Captain Miller, searching for a trace of leniency, a sign that this was merely an aggressive disciplinary tactic by an angry father rather than a formal arrest. But Thomas Miller was a professional first and a father second, and tonight, those two roles intersected with devastating precision.
""Chief, you can't arrest us for a prank,"" Jason protested, his voice carrying a desperate edge of false confidence. ""It's free speech. It's high school.""
Thomas stepped closer to Jason, invading his personal space with deliberate calm. ""Harassment, intentional infliction of emotional distress, destruction of private property, and cyberbullying using recorded media distributed across private networks,"" Thomas recited the statutes smoothly, his voice low and even. ""In this state, Jason, those aren't pranks. They are criminal charges, especially when directed at a vulnerable individual with documented medical accommodations.""
Maya watched from her wheelchair, a complex mix of vindication and anxiety washing over her. For so long, the administration had dismissed these incidents as typical teenage roughhousing. Teachers often turned a blind eye, advising her to develop thicker skin or to simply avoid the south campus field. But her father was treating this not as a schoolyard scuffle, but as a serious crime scene.
""You're being detained for questioning regarding a pattern of targeted harassment,"" Thomas continued, signaling to Officer Davies to apply the restraints. ""Turn around and place your hands behind your back.""
The metallic click of the handcuffs locking into place sent a shockwave through the remaining teenagers. One by one, the boys began to back away slowly, realizing that their association with Jason’s cruelty was about to be put under a legal microscope. The culture of impunity that had protected them for months was shattering under the unyielding weight of the law.
As Jason was led toward the back of the cruiser, he cast a venomous glare toward Maya. ""This isn't over,"" he muttered under his breath, thinking the police officers wouldn't hear.

Thomas stopped in his tracks, turning his head slightly. ""Every word you say is being recorded on body cameras, son,"" Thomas said mildly. ""Keep talking.""
Officer Davies carefully loaded Maya’s damaged wheelchair into the trunk of the primary police vehicle, while another officer brought out a clean, heavy-duty blanket to wrap around Maya’s shoulders. The transition from victim of public humiliation to the central figure in a major police investigation happened in mere minutes, leaving Maya stunned by how quickly the world around her had shifted.
