Chapter 3 - The Broken Glass

The sharp clatter of Toby’s patent leather shoes against the polished parquet floor echoed with deafening clarity through the cavernous ballroom. Time seemed to elongate, stretching each second into an eternity of suspended judgment. High-society matrons lowered their champagne flutes, their eyes wide with morbid fascination, while powerful executives whispered behind manicured hands, tracking the lone seven-year-old boy in the black tuxedo as he cut a path straight toward the amber-lit center of the room.

Elena stumbled out of her chair, her emerald earrings swinging wildly against her flushed neck. Panic clawed at her throat, choking off any sound she tried to force past her lips. She could not run; her high heels were sinking into the plush carpet, and the heavy silk of her gown wrapped around her ankles like chains. She was trapped in a nightmare of her own making, a decade of quiet compliance crumbling under the weight of her son's fierce defiance.

Julian stepped forward, breaking out of his paralyzed stupor. His face was a mask of strained composure, his white tuxedo jacket catching the light as he braced himself.

"Toby," Julian called out, his voice sharp and authoritative, laced with a desperate edge. "Stop right there. Go back to your mother this instant."

Toby didn't even slow down. He marched right up to the polished leather shoes of his father, tilting his head back to maintain direct eye contact.
