Chapter 1 - The Weight of Emeralds

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Meridian Ballroom cast a cold, merciless brilliance over the suffocating crowd. Elena sat rigidly at the VIP table, her fingers locked around seven-year-old Toby’s small, warm palm. Her emerald earrings felt suddenly heavy, like lead weights pulling at her earlobes, matching the hollow ache anchoring her chest. The silk of her one-shoulder green gown rustled softly as she exhaled a shuddering breath she had been holding since the first chords of the string quartet began. Across the table, the empty seat belonging to Julian—her husband of ten years, the man who had promised her forever under a canopy of white roses—mocked her with its vacant plushness.

Toby looked up, his dark eyes wide and heavy with a maturity no child should ever possess. He squeezed her knuckles back, his small thumb rubbing a soothing circle against her skin.

"Mom, don't cry," Toby whispered, his voice steady despite the tremor in his lower lip.

Elena forced a fragile, agonizing smile, blinking back the hot tears that threatened to ruin her composure. "I'm not crying, sweetie. Dust just got in my eye."

"You always say that when Dad isn't here," Toby said, his tone flat, devoid of childish innocence. "You're lying to me again."

"I am protecting you, Toby, that is all," Elena murmured, her voice tight and trembling as she stared across the room.

"Protecting me from the truth?" Toby shot back, his voice rising just enough to cut through the din of clinking crystal. "I am seven, Mom, not blind! Everyone here is whispering about us. They are looking at us like we are already dead!"

"Keep your voice down, Toby! People are watching us!" Elena hissed, panic tightening her throat.

"Let them watch!" Toby retorted, pulling his hand away and slamming his small palm against the mahogany table. "Dad is over there with that woman, and you are sitting here pretending everything is fine! It is not fine! Why won't you just fight back?"

"You don't understand how the world works, Toby!" Elena whispered fiercely, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Power doesn't scream; power destroys quietly, and if we make a scene, we lose everything, including each other!"

"Then let them destroy us," Toby said, his jaw tightening into a hard, unforgiving line as he stared into the glowing sea of dancers. "Because I won't let them walk all over you anymore."

Before Elena could grab his arm to pull him back, Toby stood up on his chair, pointing a small, accusing finger directly toward the edge of the dance floor.
