Chapter 7: The Interrogation in the Dark

The keypad flashed a steady blue light as the sequence was entered from the master panel upstairs, followed by the slow, mechanical whir of the secondary locking pins retracting into the door frame. Julian stepped into the cramped concrete room, his dark teal suit dusted with white chemical powder, his expression grim and resolute. He immediately pulled the heavy steel door shut behind him, engaging the manual deadbolt from the inside to ensure no one could follow him down the service corridor. Marcus let out a long, shuddering breath, sliding down the concrete wall until he sat flat on the floor beside Lily. "You made it," Marcus said, his voice laced with profound relief. "Did they see you?" Julian shook his head, brushing a smear of white powder off his sleeve. "They're distracted by the smoke, but they have thermal imaging equipment. They know someone is moving through the service wing. It’s only a matter of time before they find this access panel." Lily looked up from her protective spot against Marcus, her gaze shifting to Julian. She held out the framed family photo like a shield. "Daddy, can we go home now?" Julian knelt down, taking her small hands in his own, feeling the familiar warmth that reminded him of what he was fighting for. "We can't go back through the front, sweetheart," Julian said gently, his voice steady and devoid of panic. "We have to use the old storm drain network beneath the foundation. It leads out to the creek bed behind the perimeter fence." He looked up at Marcus, his eyes narrowing slightly in the dim amber light. "Before we move another inch, you're going to tell me the rest of the truth, Marcus. No more half-truths, no more hidden files. Who at the oversight committee is running this pipeline?" Marcus hesitated for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting toward Elena, who was still locked out in the main hallway upstairs—a terrifying realization that hit Julian like a physical blow. Julian stood up abruptly, grabbing Marcus by the collar of his unbuttoned shirt and lifting him half an inch off the concrete floor. "Where is Elena?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping to a dangerous, low register. "When I dropped the extinguisher, she was right behind me in the study. She didn't make it to the service wing." Marcus choked out a desperate gasp, his hands clawing at Julian's wrists. "She stayed behind to wipe the server logs, Julian! She knew if the local hard drives weren't scrubbed clean, the entire network would trace back to your security clearance!" Julian released his grip instantly, the stark horror of the tactical reality crashing down around him. Elena hadn't been paralyzed by fear; she had stayed behind to buy them time at the ultimate cost.
