Chapter 5: The First Breach

The heavy oak front doors groaned as a disciplined, mechanical strike hit the deadbolt from the outside. Julian stood at the top of the grand staircase, his breathing controlled and steady despite the adrenaline hammering against his ribs. He had already routed the smart-home controls to lock every interior steel shutter on the ground floor, buying them precious minutes, but old architecture had vulnerabilities that digital locks could not fix. Down below, the sound of splintering wood echoed through the cavernous foyer as the intruders deployed a hydraulic breaching tool. Julian did not hesitate; he descended the stairs halfway, keeping himself concealed behind the wrought-iron railing while scanning the shadowy expanse below. Two men in matte-black tactical gear stepped smoothly through the ruined doorway, their movements efficient, silent, and entirely devoid of civilian hesitation. They carried suppressed carbines held at a low ready position, sweeping the corners of the living room and the kitchen with thermal-scoping visors. Julian watched as the lead operative signaled to his partner, pointing directly toward the hallway that led to the pantry and the hidden panic room. A cold spike of adrenaline shot through Julian's veins. Marcus and Lily were down there, and the reinforced steel door of the panic room, while formidable, required a manual biometric sequence that took at least thirty seconds to engage from the inside. Julian needed to create a diversion—something loud, disorienting, and violent enough to draw their attention away from the southern wing of the house. His eyes scanned the foyer table where the mail and keys usually rested, spotting an antique brass fire extinguisher mounted beside the grandfather clock. Moving with absolute silence, Julian slid down the final section of the staircase, keeping his body low against the wainscoting. The operatives were already moving past the grand piano, their boots clicking softly against the marble tiles. Julian reached the heavy brass cylinder, unhooking it from its wall mount with a sharp wrench that scraped slightly against the plaster. One of the operatives whirled around instantly, the red laser sight of his carbine sweeping across the empty air just inches above Julian's head. Without wasting a second, Julian slammed the heavy valve of the extinguisher against the marble floor, shattering the safety seal and releasing a blinding, pressurized cloud of white chemical powder directly into the center of the foyer. The thick fog billowed upward instantly, obscuring visibility and setting off the overhead smoke alarms with a shrill, deafening shriek. Shouts of confusion echoed through the white haze as the intruders stumbled backward, coughing sharply against the dense aerosol particles. Julian used the cover of the artificial blizzard to sprint toward the southern hallway, his heart pounding in his ears as he prayed Marcus had made it safely behind the heavy steel vault doors.
