Chapter 14: Rehearsing the Future

Back inside the farmhouse living room, the atmosphere was a warm blend of nostalgia and cautious optimism. The wedding guests were scheduled to arrive at the nearby country inn by evening, but the ceremony itself—at Claire’s insistence—would take place right here, on the lawn beneath the ancient oak tree just outside the kitchen window.

Claire stood before the full-length mirror in her old bedroom, smoothing down the front of her simple, elegant dress while the white lace robe lay draped neatly across the foot of the bed. The panic that had gripped her throat yesterday was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, grounded clarity. She looked out the window and watched David down in the yard, working together with Arthur to set up a long wooden banquet table using planks salvaged from the old workshop.

There was an easy camaraderie between the two men now, a mutual respect forged through shared vulnerability and the sudden realization that they were all part of something much larger than themselves. David looked up toward the window, catching Claire’s reflection in the glass, and offered a warm, reassuring smile that made her heart skip a beat.

Martha walked into the room carrying a small crystal vase filled with freshly cut wildflowers she had gathered from the garden. She set it gently on the dresser, looking at her daughter with a tender, knowing expression. "You look beautiful, Claire," Martha said softly, her voice steady and full of quiet pride. "Your grandfather would have been so proud of the life you’re building here."

"We’re building it together, Mom," Claire replied, turning away from the mirror to embrace her mother tightly. "Thank you for holding the line when we didn't understand."
