Chapter 10: The Stranger on the Morning Bus

Dawn broke over Willow Creek with a pale, washed-out sky that promised a crisp, biting autumn day. By seven in the morning, the white tour buses idling down the road were joined by a sleek, black sedan that looked entirely out of place against the gravel and mud. A man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out of the vehicle, holding a leather briefcase and adjusting his glasses as he surveyed the sprawling property with an expression of quiet reverence.

Martha met him at the wooden farm gate, wearing her cream-colored shirt and beige pants, her graying hair neat in the morning breeze. Arthur stood a few yards back with the two collies, watching the exchange like a sentinel guarding a treasure vault. Claire and David emerged from the farmhouse porch, walking down the gravel path to witness the arrival of the new era.

"Good morning, Martha," the stranger said, extending a hand. His voice was warm, carrying a gentle cadence that instantly disarmed some of the tension in the air. "I trust the drive out was smooth?"

"It was, Thomas," Martha replied, shaking his hand firmly. "The market was lively as usual."

Thomas turned his attention toward Claire and David, offering a polite nod. "I’m Thomas Vance. I know my company’s presence here has caused a significant amount of distress, but I assure you, our intentions are entirely aligned with the preservation of this land's history."

"Preservation usually looks a bit different than a fleet of commercial tour buses parked on our front lawn," Claire countered sharply, stepping forward. "So forgive us if we don't take your corporate promises at face value."

Thomas smiled faintly, completely unbothered by her hostility. He set his briefcase down on the top rail of the wooden gate and popped the latches. "I completely understand, Miss Vance. Which is why I brought something to show you. Something your mother insisted you see before the final paperwork is filed." He reached inside the leather case and pulled out a thick, bound manuscript wrapped in faded brown paper.
