Chapter 4 - The Lockdown Trap

The heavy steel security shutters slammed down over the mess hall windows with a deafening metallic crash, cutting off the natural light and plunging the perimeter into the sterile glare of emergency backup fluorescents. Across the room, junior officers and enlisted personnel stood up abruptly from their tables, their chatter instantly dying away as the automated lockdown sirens began to wail a low, pulsing drone.
Elena didn't flinch at the sudden chaos. Her eyes remained locked on Admiral Cole, whose hand was still hovering over the manila envelope on the table. The timing of the base-wide lockdown was far too precise to be a routine drill. Someone in the command structure had anticipated this exact confrontation and had triggered the electronic blast doors to seal the room before the files could change hands.
“Expecting company, Admiral?” Elena asked, her lips curling into a cold, knowing smile.
Admiral Cole withdrew his hand from the envelope as if it were burning hot. He stood tall, adjusting the cuffs of his white dress uniform with absolute, chilling composure. “It appears the base security protocols are functioning precisely as intended, Commander. An unauthorized data breach requires an immediate containment of all active personnel in the immediate vicinity.”
“You locked down the entire mess hall just to intercept one file?” Emily cried out, stepping closer to the table, her face flushed with anger and disbelief. She looked frantically between the Admiral and her husband. “What is happening here? Thomas, tell me what is going on right now, or I swear to God I am walking out that blast door the second it opens!”
“You can't walk out anywhere, Mrs. Vance,” a cold voice echoed from behind them.
Captain Miller, the base Provost Marshal, marched purposefully across the polished floor. Two armed master-at-arms military police officers flanked him, their sidearms holstered but their hands resting close to the grips. Miller’s khakis were immaculate, his expression carved from granite. He stopped a few feet from their table, his eyes scanning Elena, Thomas, and the Admiral with clinical detachment.
“Commander Barrett,” Captain Miller said sharply, nodding once in formal recognition. “You are ordered to step away from the table and surrender all classified materials in your possession immediately.”
Thomas let out a visible breath of relief, his posture straightening as the military police moved in. The cavalry had arrived, and it wore the uniform of internal security.
Elena did not move an inch. She planted her boots firmly on the polished wood, squaring her shoulders inside her dark service dress uniform. “I am acting under direct orders from the Naval Inspector General’s investigative division, Captain. This envelope contains evidence of a suppressed maritime disaster report. You have no legal authority to confiscate it without a federal warrant signed by a military magistrate.”
Captain Miller didn't blink. He took another step forward, signaling the military police to close the distance. “The Inspector General’s office has no jurisdiction inside a secure base during an active cyber-lockdown, Commander. Hand over the folder, or I will have you detained for possession of stolen classified government property.”
“Try it, Miller,” Elena said softly, her hand resting casually over the top of the envelope. “And watch how fast the entire Pacific Fleet command structure unravels on the congressional wire by morning.”
Admiral Cole raised a single hand, signaling the Provost Marshal to pause. The Admiral looked down at the table, his gray eyes narrowing as he weighed his options. The presence of the Military Police meant the lockdown wasn't just a localized containment; it was a systemic clean-up operation.
“Miller,” Admiral Cole said quietly. “Wait.”
Thomas looked at the Admiral in sheer panic. “Sir, you can't let her—progression of this file will destroy—progression of—”
“Quiet, Lieutenant Commander,” the Admiral cut him off with a single, devastating glare that silenced Thomas instantly.

Emily stared at her husband in absolute horror, the final pieces of the puzzle clicking into place. She reached out and grabbed the edge of the manila envelope herself, ripping it open before anyone could stop her.
