Chapter 15: Where the Road Ends

The morning sun rose over Willow Creek, casting a warm, golden glow across the white painted porch and the sprawling branches of the grand oak tree in the front yard. The air smelled of woodsmoke, wet grass, and the promise of a quiet, undisturbed autumn day.
Jax sat on the wooden steps of the porch with a mug of black coffee in his hand, watching the dust motes dance in the early morning light. The heavy leather vest hung neatly over the back of the living room chair inside—abandoned, forgotten, and left entirely behind. He wore a simple flannel shirt and worn jeans, his hands clean of grease for the first time in weeks.
The screen door creaked open behind him. Leo stepped out onto the porch, wearing a clean blue shirt and carrying his school backpack over one shoulder. His messy brown hair was neatly combed, and his hazel eyes shone with a quiet, confident joy that had been entirely absent when they first met outside the Oakhaven Diner weeks ago.
"Are you walking me to the schoolhouse today?" Leo asked, adjusting the straps of his pack.
Jax stood up, setting his coffee mug down on the railing. A slow, genuine smile spread across his face, reaching all the way to his eyes.

"Every single day, kid," Jax said softly, stepping off the porch to walk beside him.
They started down the gravel path together, heading past the detached garage where a repaired tractor sat waiting for tomorrow’s work, out toward the tree-lined country road where the golden leaves drifted gently down from the branches. Jax looked down at the boy walking beside him—his flesh, his blood, his redemption. The road behind them was long, jagged, and stained with the choices of a broken past. But looking ahead at the bright, open valley stretching out beneath the endless American sky, Jax knew the only road that mattered was the one they were walking together.
