Chapter 13: The Shadow Returns

The crisp October air brought brilliant colors to the valley, painting the surrounding hills in shades of scarlet, amber, and gold. Jax had settled into a quiet routine, working odd mechanical jobs for local farmers who needed their tractors and harvesters repaired before the first deep frost. Leo was thriving at the schoolhouse, coming home every afternoon with chalk-stained fingers, stories about his new friends, and a stack of library books tucked securely under his arm.

Yet, peace in a life like Jax’s was always a fragile thing.

It happened on a quiet Thursday evening just as the sun dipped below the western ridge. Jax was in the detached garage, methodically cleaning the carburetor of an old John Deere tractor part while the radio played a low, static-filled country station. Leo was inside the house finishing his spelling homework at the kitchen table.

A low, familiar rumble echoed down the quiet dirt lane outside—the unmistakable deep-throated exhaust note of a customized V-twin chopper.

Jax froze. His hand tightened around the wrench until his knuckles turned white. He set the tool down slowly on the workbench, wiped his greasy hands on a rag, and walked out into the cool evening air.

Two matte-black motorcycles rolled slowly up the gravel driveway, their headlights cutting harsh beams through the gathering dusk. The riders killed their engines, letting the metal ping and pop as the blocks cooled in the evening breeze.

Only one rider dismounted: Rico.

He didn't wear his full colors, but the heavy leather vest with the scarred patches remained unmistakable. He walked toward the garage with a slow, arrogant swagger, his eyes scanning the modest white house with open contempt.

"Nice setup you got here, Jax," Rico said, stopping ten feet away. "Playing domestic farmer while the club’s business falls apart up north."

Jax stepped out into the open, planting his boots firmly on the gravel. His face was like carved granite, completely devoid of fear or hesitation. "I told Buck I was done. What part of that didn't reach the clubhouse?"

"The president doesn't care what you told Buck," Rico sneered, crossing his arms over his chest. "We got federal heat breathing down our necks. The feds raided the northern warehouse last Tuesday. They found ledgers with names, routes, and financial logs. The president thinks someone leaked the safehouse locations."

Jax let out a cold, sharp laugh. "And naturally, since I walked away right before the raid, I'm the primary suspect."

"Naturally," Rico confirmed, narrowing his eyes. "The president wants you brought in for questioning. Voluntary or not."

Before Jax could step forward, the front screen door of the house squeaked open. Leo stepped out onto the porch, clutching his spelling book tightly against his chest, his big hazel eyes fixed with sudden, unmistakable terror on the man standing in the driveway.
