The sun hung low in the western sky, painting the clouds in brilliant hues of amber, rose, and gold. The suburban street was bathed in a warm, serene twilight glow, untouched by sirens, smoke, or fear. The neighborhood had healed, its roots sinking deep into honest soil.
Martha and Elena stood side by side at the edge of the porch, looking out over the vibrant community garden that spanned the space where the old house had once stood. The charred timbers and broken gas meter were distant memories, replaced by the vibrant promise of tomorrow.
"What are your plans for the summer, Martha?" Elena asked softly, breaking the companionable silence.
Martha turned her head, her reddish-brown curls catching the golden light, her eyes bright and clear. "I think I’m going to plant roses. Red ones. Right along the property line."
Elena laughed, a light, melodic sound that carried across the lawn. "I’ll help you weed them."
