Chapter 6

The engine cut out with a sharp ping, followed by the heavy, echoing slam of a car door. Through the kitchen window, Clara saw the unmistakable silhouette of Arthur stepping out from behind the wheel of his sedan, his posture rigid and purposeful under the pale glow of the security light. A second later, the passenger door opened, and Margaret emerged, her blouse now changed into a dark trench coat, her face set into a grim, unyielding mask of institutional authority.

"They're here," Clara whispered, panic clawing at her throat. She looked down at the bassinet where Maeve slept peacefully, completely unaware that her grandparents were walking up the front path with legal papers and a lifetime of deception.

Julian cursed under his breath, moving swiftly to the back door that led out to the overgrown yard. "We don't have time to pack, Clara. If Arthur has the sheriff's deputies with him—and he usually does—they'll lock you down under a mental health warrant before you can even explain. Grab the baby bag and follow me."

"No," Clara said, stepping firmly between Julian and the back exit. Her mind, usually prone to hesitation, locked onto a sudden, fierce clarity. Running away like a terrified animal would only play into their hands. If they had filed a conservatorship, fleeing would make her look unstable, validating every lie they had spent decades constructing. "I'm not running. I’ve spent my entire life hiding from things I didn't understand. It stops tonight."

"Clara, you don't understand the reach of these people," Julian hissed, grabbing her arm with surprising strength. "Arthur isn't just some retired pen-pusher. He still has contacts within the state health board. They can declare you legally incapacitated before midnight, and they’ll take Maeve to 'protect her from infection.' That was the exact phrase your mother used today."

A sharp, authoritative knock sounded at the front door, followed immediately by Arthur’s calm, carrying voice. "Clara? Open the door. We know you’re in there. Let's not make this harder on the child than it already needs to be."

Clara looked from the front hallway to Julian, then down at the sleeping infant. She gently pulled her arm free from her uncle's grip. "Hide in the pantry," she told Julian, her voice steady and chillingly calm. "If they find you here, they'll use you to discredit everything. But leave the file on the table."

Julian hesitated, his eyes scanning Clara’s face for a sign of surrender, but finding only cold steel. With a sharp nod, he slipped silently into the pantry, pulling the louvered door shut just as the front door handle rattled violently.

Clara took a deep breath, smoothing the front of her green sweater. She walked down the short hallway, her footsteps echoing softly against the wood. Reaching the front door, she didn't hesitate. She unlocked the deadbolt, pulled the door open wide, and stood in the threshold, blocking the entrance to her home.
