Chapter 5: Whispers in the Neighborhood

By late afternoon, the ambulance had long since departed for the county hospital, its red lights fading down the highway. However, the police cruiser remained parked at the curb, and Officer Miller was still inside the Sterling home taking initial statements. Outside, the neighborhood was alive with quiet, frantic motion. Curtains twitched across the street as local residents peered through their windows, exchanging hurried phone calls about the flashing lights and the shocking sight of paramedics carrying newborn twins out of the Sterling household.
Inside the living room, the atmosphere was suffocating. Arthur sat stiffly on the edge of a cream-colored leather armchair, his hands clasped tightly over the gold handle of his walking cane. Margaret paced near the bay window, her green blouse slightly wrinkled from the stress, her department store shopping bags ignored and kicked into a corner. Chloe sat on the sofa, scrolling aimlessly on her smartphone, though her eyes kept darting toward the front door where Officer Miller stood writing in his notepad.
Ethan stood near the fireplace, a glass of scotch in his hand, though he hadn't taken a single sip. His tie was loosened, and the sharp lines of his grey suit seemed to sag around his shoulders. The memory of Clara’s outstretched hand and her desperate plea for the hospital replayed on an endless loop in his mind.
"I don't understand why we are being treated like suspects," Margaret snapped, stopping her pacing to glare at the police officer. "My daughter-in-law went into labor prematurely. It is a medical event, not a crime. Why won't you leave?"
Officer Miller clicked his pen shut, the sound sharp in the quiet room. He looked at Margaret with an unyielding gaze. "Mrs. Sterling, a woman nearly died of neglect on your front porch while you and your family stepped over her to carry shopping bags inside. Neighbors heard her cries and called us. Furthermore, preliminary reports from the attending physician indicate severe signs of prolonged physical stress and untreated medical complications during her pregnancy. We are investigating potential criminal negligence."
Arthur slammed his cane onto the hardwood floor, the crack echoing through the room. "Negligence? She chose to sit on the porch! We told her to wait until Ethan finished his business call! She was being dramatic, as usual!"

"She was delivering twins alone on the floor while you told her it wasn't serious," Miller countered, his voice remarkably calm compared to Arthur’s rising fury. "The hospital has placed both infants in protective custody pending a social services review. And your wife—Clara—is currently in intensive care, fighting for her life."
Ethan’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the hearth, amber liquid pooling across the stone.
