Chapter 12: Shadows of the Past

Two weeks after the birth, Clara was discharged from the hospital and moved into a modest, sunlit apartment on the third floor of a brick building overlooking a quiet downtown park. The apartment was furnished with simple, rented furniture and filled with the gentle, domestic noises of two newborn infants.

Ethan had taken on every domestic and caregiving responsibility. He cooked, he cleaned, he woke up every two hours for feeding rotations, and he managed the endless stream of social worker visits and medical check-ups. The sharp-suited corporate man who had walked away down the driveway was gone, replaced by a father learning humility the hard way.

Yet, the shadow of the Sterling estate still loomed large.

One afternoon, a sharp knock echoed at the apartment door. Ethan paused, wiping his hands on a kitchen towel, and walked cautiously to the entryway. He opened the door to find Arthur standing in the hallway. The older man looked older, his navy blazer unbuttoned, his face lined with genuine distress and bruised pride.

"Ethan," Arthur said, attempting to push past his son into the apartment.

Ethan stood his ground, blocking the doorway entirely. His frame filled the frame, his expression unyielding. "You shouldn't be here, Dad. There is a court-mandated no-contact order in place."

"Don't talk to me about court orders, Ethan," Arthur said, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "The board at Sterling Enterprises is in a panic. Without you and without our family unity being publicly displayed, our biggest commercial accounts are pulling out. The media is sniffing around the police report about the porch incident. We need to issue a joint family statement dismissing the allegations as a misunderstanding."

Ethan stared at his father with a chilling sense of detachment. He realized then that Arthur hadn't come to check on his grandchildren or apologize to Clara. He had come because his social standing and corporate empire were crumbling.

"You still don't get it, do you?" Ethan said quietly. "You care more about a corporate board than you do about your own flesh and blood."

"We built this empire for you!" Arthur hissed, his temper flaring through his desperation. "You are throwing away generations of hard work for a melodramatic domestic dispute!"

From the living room, Clara stood in the doorway, holding Maya in her arms. She didn't yell. She looked at Arthur with a calm, unbreakable resolve. "Get out of our home, Arthur. If you take one more step inside, I will call Officer Miller myself and have you arrested for violating the restraining order."

Arthur looked from Clara to his son, seeing the absolute finality in their eyes. Realizing he had lost all leverage, he turned on his heel and walked away down the stairwell without another word.
