Chapter 12: The Internal Breach

The next morning, Elena walked into the executive boardroom with the weight of David’s warning heavy on her shoulders. The directors were already seated, murmuring quietly among themselves as they reviewed the quarterly projections. Arthur Sterling sat near the center, looking distinguished and composed as always, offering her a polite, grandfatherly nod as she took her place at the head of the table.

Elena didn't present the quarterly projections. Instead, she placed a single flash drive on the mahogany surface, sliding it toward the center of the table.

"Before we discuss financials," Elena said, her voice cutting through the murmurs with absolute authority, "we need to address a security breach within our own executive ranks."

Arthur raised an eyebrow, maintaining a mask of calm curiosity. "A security breach, Elena? Our cybersecurity audits came back completely clean last week."

"Standard audits don't detect cryptographic signatures tied to international criminal consortia like the Obsidian Syndicate," Elena replied, locking her gaze directly onto Arthur’s eyes. "A signature registered under Meridian Holdings—a shell company used to funnel illicit operational control directly to regional syndicate lieutenants."

A tense silence descended upon the boardroom. Several directors shifted uncomfortably in their seats, while Arthur’s expression remained smooth, though a subtle micro-expression of tension flickered across the corners of his mouth.

"That is a very serious accusation, Elena," Arthur said calmly, folding his hands on the table. "Are you suggesting that someone on this board is conspiring with criminal syndicates?"

"I’m not suggesting it, Arthur. I’m proving it," Elena said, tapping the flash drive. "This drive contains the encrypted communication logs linking our internal supply chain authorizations directly to an Obsidian proxy server. And the master authorization key used to bypass the firewall last night bears your personal executive signature."

The room erupted into chaotic whispers. Directors looked at one another with suspicion and shock. Arthur, however, did not panic. He slowly leaned back in his leather chair, a slow, knowing smile touching his lips.

"You are exceptionally thorough, Elena," Arthur said, his voice losing its grandfatherly warmth and turning ice-cold. "Julian was a fool for underestimating you. But you really thought you could dismantle a global network simply by locking me out of a boardroom?"
