Chapter 11: The Serpent's Crest

The revelation of the Obsidian Syndicate’s crest changed the entire paradigm of Elena’s fight. This was no longer a localized corporate dispute over shares and debt; she had stepped into a global chess game where Vance Industries was merely a pawn meant to be sacrificed for a larger strategic foothold in the North American defense sector.
Elena knew that local law enforcement or federal agencies would move too slowly against an organization with international reach and deep political connections. If she wanted to dismantle the threat permanently, she had to strike at the root before the syndicate could regroup and launch a secondary assault on her company.
She contacted David Vance, her estranged cousin and former federal intelligence analyst who had left government service years ago to live a quiet life off the grid in the Pacific Northwest. David was the only person she trusted who understood the inner workings of international criminal syndicates like the Obsidian Syndicate.
"Elena," David’s voice came through the secure satellite phone line, calm and cautious. "It’s been a long time. People in my line of work don't usually hear from corporate titans unless someone is about to be indicted or assassinated. Which is it?"
"Neither, David. At least, not yet," Elena replied, her tone urgent but controlled. "I found the Obsidian crest on a document recovered from one of their regional operatives here in the city. They’re targeting Vance Industries’ defense contracts."
A heavy silence hung on the line for several seconds before David spoke again. "The Syndicate doesn't care about corporate dividends, Elena. They use defense contractors as conduits for secure communication channels and illicit hardware transport across borders. If they’ve targeted your supply chain, they’ve already compromised someone inside your executive ranks."
"Who?" Elena demanded, her grip tightening on the phone.

"That’s the problem," David said grimly. "They don't recruit low-level grunts for this kind of infiltration. They buy people who already hold power. Check your board. Check the people closest to you."
The call disconnected with a soft click, leaving Elena standing in the silence of her penthouse study. The warning echoed in her mind with terrifying clarity. The threat wasn't outside her gates anymore; it was sitting across the table from her in the boardroom.
