Chapter 11

The glow of the computer monitor illuminated Marcus’s face as he typed rapidly, drafting the legal separation papers and the sworn affidavit of non-involvement. The rhythmic clicking of the mechanical keyboard filled the silent office like the ticking of a courtroom clock. Helen sat motionless in the leather chair, staring out the massive floor-to-ceiling window at the glittering expanse of the city below. Every light out there represented a family, a business, a secret, or a lie. Julian was out there somewhere in the dark, still trying to salvage an empire built on quicksand. She felt a profound sense of detachment from him now, as if the man she had lived with for thirty years had simply been an elaborate character in a play that had finally reached its final act.

Marcus hit the final keystroke, swiveled the monitor toward her, and slid a multi-page document across the mahogany desk along with a heavy silver fountain pen. "Read every word, Helen. Once you sign this, you are formally severing yourself from Julian’s corporate liabilities, but you are also triggering an immediate forensic audit of every joint asset you share." Helen picked up the pen. Its weight felt grounding in her fingers. She scanned the legal jargon, her eyes pausing on her full maiden name written into the paragraphs of indemnity and disclaimer. She did not hesitate. With steady, deliberate strokes, she signed her name at the bottom of the page, pressing hard enough to emboss the paper.

Marcus witnessed the signature, stamping the document with his official notary seal with a sharp, echoing thud. He handed her a copy in a clean manila folder. "This won't stop the federal investigators from interviewing you, Helen. You’ll need to cooperate fully with the U.S. Attorney’s office tomorrow morning when they arrive at the house." Helen stood up, tucking the folder securely under her arm. "I am ready, Marcus. I should have burned that bridge years ago instead of watching Julian set fire to a trampoline." Marcus nodded grimly, walking her to the private elevator. "Be careful going back up the canyon tonight, Helen. Julian is desperate, and desperate men make dangerous mistakes."
