Chapter 15: Flight to the Sky

The plates arrived piled high with golden, fluffy pancakes dripping in butter and dark amber syrup. Maya dug in with quiet enthusiasm, her small fork cutting through the soft cake with careful concentration. Mateo watched her eat, a profound sense of peace settling over him for the first time in three years. The constant hyper-vigilance, the fear of the next knock on the door, the terror of the poison in the study—it all felt like a lifetime ago, washed away by the mountain snow and left behind in the dark woods.

As Maya finished her last bite of pancake, she laid her fork down neatly on the plate, wiped her mouth with a paper napkin, and turned her attention back to the massive picture window.

Outside, a flock of white snow geese lifted off from the riverbank, their broad wings catching the morning sunlight as they rose in a synchronized sweep straight up into the vast, open blue sky.

Maya’s eyes widened with quiet wonder. She pointed a small finger at the glass. ""Look, Daddy. They're flying to the sky.""

Mateo smiled, sliding out of the booth and sitting down right beside her on the red vinyl bench. He wrapped his tattooed arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his chest so she could lean her head comfortably against his white shirt.

""They sure are, sweetheart,"" Mateo whispered softly, pressing his cheek against her dark hair as he watched the birds soar higher and higher until they dissolved into the bright morning light. ""They're flying all the way up.""

""Are we going to stay here now?"" she asked, her voice calm and steady, carrying the absolute certainty of a child who knew she was finally safe.

Mateo looked around the warm, quiet diner—at the friendly waitress wiping down the counter, the gentle river flowing outside the window, and the clear, limitless horizon stretching out before them. The nightmares of the syndicate were behind them, buried beneath snow and time. They had crossed the fire, and they had made it through to the other side.

""We're going to stay right here,"" Mateo answered softly, his voice full of a deep, enduring peace. ""You're okay now, Maya. We're both okay now.""

She smiled gently, leaning her head deeper against his chest, her small hand reaching out to clutch her stuffed rabbit while the golden morning sun flooded through the window, washing away every shadow of the past.
