Chapter 12: Echoes of the Valley

The sharp, concussive cracks of the pistol shots echoed like cannon fire inside the enclosed concrete snowshed. The first mercenary stumbled backward out the doorway, dropping his weapon as he collapsed into the snow drift outside. The second figure cursed loudly in German, diving behind a heavy iron rail cart inside the shed and sweeping his suppressed rifle toward the shadows where Mateo stood.

A burst of silenced rounds chewed into the timber beam inches above Mateo’s head, raining splinters down onto his shoulders.

""Mateo!"" a voice called out from behind the rail cart, strained and distorted by a tactical comms unit. ""It's over! Vance wants the drive, but he doesn't care if the girl and you are breathing when we bring it back!""

Mateo didn't reply. He dropped to one knee, sliding silently across the concrete floor behind a stack of rusted iron plates. He checked his magazine; five rounds left. Every shot had to count.

Across the room, the mercenary shifted his weight, his boot scraping against a loose piece of gravel. Mateo tracked the sound, waiting for the exact moment the man would lean out to fire.

Suddenly, a soft rustling sound came from the corner where Maya was hiding. The mercenary’s head snapped toward the noise, his rifle barrel swinging away from Mateo’s position.

""Got you,"" the man muttered, stepping out from behind the rail cart and raising his weapon toward the dark corner.

""Drop it,"" Mateo commanded, stepping out into the dim light of the dying embers, his pistol leveled squarely at the center of the man's chest.

The mercenary froze, slowly lowering his rifle barrel. He looked at Mateo, then down at the titanium flash drive clipped securely inside Mateo’s vest pocket. A slow, grim smile crossed the man's face beneath his tactical visor.

""You think shooting us stops anything, Mateo?"" the mercenary rasped, blood trickling from a graze on his shoulder. ""Vance has already uploaded the secondary ledger. Your little insurance policy is worthless. The entire board of directors knows you're running. You're a ghost walking in a graveyard.""

Mateo’s finger tightened on the trigger, the pressure building against his skin. Every instinct screamed to pull it, to end the threat once and for all. But then he glanced at the corner. Maya was peeking out from behind the crate, her dark eyes wide and fixed entirely on him. She wasn't crying, but he could see the profound, crushing weight of the violence reflecting in her young face. She was absorbing every second of this, learning what it meant to survive in a world built on blood and secrets.

Mateo lowered the pistol by a fraction of an inch. He couldn't let her see him become a cold-blooded executioner.

""Get in the snowcat,"" Mateo ordered, his voice cold as the mountain wind. ""Turn it around, and drive back south across the border. If I ever see your face again, I won't hesitate.""

The mercenary stared at him in disbelief for a second, then slowly backed toward the open door, keeping his hands visible. He scrambled out into the snow, dove into the driver's seat of the snowcat, and within seconds, the heavy vehicle roared to life, spinning its tracks before tearing off down the snowy logging road toward the American border.
