Chapter 9: The Corporate Shadow

While peace settled over the second-floor guest suite, the digital world outside the Sterling estate was beginning to stir. In a sleek glass-paneled boardroom downtown, Arthur Vance sat at the head of a mahogany table, staring intently at a glowing tablet screen. Arthur, the ruthless CEO of Vance Corporation, had been circling the Sterling enterprise for months, looking for any sign of weakness that could force a hostile takeover.
His phone buzzed on the polished wood. He picked it up immediately, sliding his finger across the screen to answer a private investigator he had placed on retainer near the Sterling valley.
“Talk to me, Miller,” Arthur said, his voice cold and analytical.
“Mr. Vance, you’re not going to believe what happened at the Sterling estate this morning,” the investigator replied on the other end of the line. “There was an incident involving a domestic worker, a baby, and a massive confrontation in the foyer between Julian and his mother.”
Arthur leaned forward, his interest instantly piqued. “A baby? I thought the Sterling heir had no family prospects on the horizon. Eleanor Sterling made sure of that when we discussed the merger terms.”
“That’s the catch, sir,” Miller continued. “The baby was born three days ago. The mother is a young maid who worked in their home. Eleanor tried to cover it up, shipped the girl off to the servants' quarters, and told Julian the child was lost. But Julian found out today. He’s turned the estate upside down, brought the maid and the baby into the main guest wing, and declared war on his mother.”
A slow, calculated smile spread across Arthur Vance’s face. This was better than anything he could have engineered. A family scandal involving an illegitimate child, corporate deception, and a fractured relationship between mother and son was the ultimate leverage.
“Keep digging, Miller,” Arthur instructed, his tone laced with predatory satisfaction. “Find out the maid’s identity, get copies of any medical records, and make sure we have all the documentation ready. If Julian Sterling is distracted by a domestic custody war, his attention won’t be on the upcoming board vote.”

“Understood, Mr. Vance. I’ll have a full dossier compiled by morning.”
Arthur hung up the phone and stood, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the glittering city skyline. The Sterling empire, built over generations, was about to crumble from the inside out, and he intended to be right there to pick up the pieces.
