Chapter 10: Midnight Confessions

The grandfather clock in the second-floor hallway chimed midnight. The Sterling estate was entirely dark, save for the warm glow emanating from the west guest suite. Inside, Julian sat in the plush armchair by the window, a cup of cold coffee resting on the table beside him. The baby was fast asleep in her bassinet, breathing softly.
Clara sat across from him on the edge of the bed, her hands wrapped around a mug of chamomile tea that Mr. Henderson had discreetly brought up hours earlier. The silence between them was no longer tense; it had grown into a quiet understanding forged by the shared turmoil of the past twenty-four hours.
“You never told me how you ended up working here, Clara,” Julian said quietly, breaking the silence. He kept his voice low so as not to disturb the baby.
Clara looked down into her mug, watching the steam rise slowly into the air. She took a small sip before speaking. “My family lost our farm in the valley two years ago. My father fell ill, and the medical bills piled up until we lost everything. Coming to work at the Sterling estate was supposed to be a temporary fix—just enough to send money home for my mother and younger brother.”
Julian listened intently, his expression softening. He remembered the financial reports of the regional agricultural sector from two years ago, though numbers on a spreadsheet never truly captured the human cost of economic failure.
“And then you met me,” Julian said, the weight of the past heavy in his tone.
“And then I met you,” Clara repeated softly, offering a faint, melancholic smile. “You were working late in the study, always stressed, always carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. We crossed paths in the hallway, and... one thing led to another. It was foolish, I know. I’m just a maid from the valley, and you’re Julian Sterling.”
“Stop that,” Julian interrupted firmly, leaning forward. His dark eyes locked onto hers with absolute seriousness. “Don’t ever refer to yourself that way again, Clara. Wealth and titles are accidents of birth. Character, strength, and integrity—those are choices. And you have shown more of all three in the past twenty-four hours than my mother has in her entire life.”
Clara felt a warm flush rise to her cheeks. She looked away, feeling the intensity of his gaze. For months, she had been treated as invisible, a servant whose existence was acknowledged only when something was out of place. To hear a man like Julian Sterling speak to her with such genuine respect was entirely overwhelming.

“Your mother won't let this go, Julian,” Clara murmured, voicing the fear that still lingered in the back of her mind. “She built this empire, and she views everything—including you—as part of her legacy. She will fight back.”
“Let her,” Julian replied, his jaw tightening slightly. “For the first time in my life, I know what is actually worth fighting for.”
