Chapter 5

The courtroom of the County Superior Court was bathed in amber light filtering through tall, dust-streaked windows. Judge Harris, a stern man with silver hair and an imposing presence, presided over the emergency custody hearing with an expression of deep skepticism. Seated at the defense table was Julian Sterling, impeccably groomed in a fresh dark green velvet blazer—though this one lacked the designer label of the original, expertly tailored to meet prison regulations—flanked by a high-priced attorney named Marcus Vance.
Clara sat across the aisle, flanked by Maya and a pro-bono family law specialist named David Chen. David was young, sharp, and possessed a quiet confidence that steadied Clara’s nerves.
"Mr. Sterling’s counsel has requested immediate reunification and dismissal of the protective orders, citing maternal alienation," Judge Harris stated, scanning the paperwork before him. "However, the court has also received a preliminary filing from the district attorney's office regarding potential financial discrepancies linked to Mr. Sterling’s corporate accounts."
Marcus Vance stood up, adjusting his silk tie with an air of practiced arrogance. "Your Honor, these financial allegations are a desperate smoke screen concocted by Mrs. Sterling to deflect from her own erratic behavior. My client is a respected pillar of the community, a loving father who wears his heart on his sleeve—as evidenced by the matching jackets he and his son cherish." Vance offered a theatrical smile. "Mrs. Sterling suffers from a well-documented anxiety disorder, and her abduction of the child was a manic episode."
David Chen stood immediately, his voice calm and steady. "Objection, Your Honor. Mr. Vance is mischaracterizing medical history. Furthermore, we have submitted sworn affidavits detailing years of systematic psychological coercion, financial imprisonment, and physical intimidation." David stepped forward, placing a sealed envelope on the clerk’s desk. "And we have physical evidence of corporate fraud that directly ties Mr. Sterling’s ability to provide a safe environment to criminal enterprise."
Julian’s eyes narrowed as he looked at David. For the first time, the cool, untouchable mask slipped slightly. He leaned over and whispered something fiercely into his lawyer’s ear. Vance’s confident demeanor flickered for a fraction of a second.
Judge Harris opened the sealed envelope, his eyes scanning the printed pages of the financial ledger Clara had downloaded. The silence in the courtroom grew heavy, broken only by the hum of the air conditioning.
"This court takes allegations of corporate malfeasance and domestic coercion very seriously," Judge Harris said slowly, looking directly at Julian. "Given the severity of the documentation provided, the protective order remains fully active. Temporary custody of the minor child, Leo Sterling, is granted exclusively to the mother, Clara Sterling, under court-supervised supervision."
Julian stood up abruptly, his hands slamming onto the wooden table with a loud crack. "Your Honor, this is an outrage! You are letting a mentally unstable woman steal my son!"

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling, or I will hold you in contempt of court," Judge Harris warned, his voice sharp as a razor. "Bailiff, keep the defendant restrained."
Two court officers stepped forward, placing firm hands on Julian’s shoulders. Julian glared across the room at Clara, his expression a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. He didn't care about the corporate fraud charges; he cared about control. And Clara had just taken his most prized possession away from him in front of a judge.
