Chapter 4

The safe house was located in a nondescript residential neighborhood, its windows reinforced with security film and heavy curtains. Outside, dusk settled over the quiet street, casting long, eerie shadows across the lawn. Inside, Clara found it impossible to sleep. She sat on the edge of a narrow twin bed, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of her sleeping son in the next room. Every creak of the floorboards, every distant rumble of traffic made her heart skip a beat.
Her phone, a burner provided by the safe house, vibrated quietly on the nightstand. She picked it up with a trembling thumb. An anonymous text message flashed on the screen: You can run into the dark, Clara, but the green velvet follows you everywhere.
Panic seized her throat. How did they find this number? She had turned off her old phone, ditched her smart watch, and followed Maya’s protocols to the letter. She rushed into the common area, her bare feet silent against the linoleum floor. Maya was at her desk, reviewing files under the dim light of a desk lamp.
"Maya," Clara whispered urgently, holding out the phone. "Look at this. They found me. They already know where we are."
Maya looked up, her expression hardening instantly. She took the phone, read the message, and immediately stood up, walking toward the secure window. She peered through the heavy blinds into the twilight street. "Stay away from the windows, Clara. Let me see who’s out there."
"We have to leave," Clara said, her voice rising in panic. "We can't stay here. If he sent someone, we aren't safe."
"Calm down, Clara. Listen to me," Maya said firmly, placing a steady hand on Clara’s shoulder. "This safe house is secure. No one knows this address except the intake officers and the local precinct. This text isn't from someone outside; it’s a psychological tactic. Julian wants you to feel hunted so you’ll make a mistake. He’s playing mind games through intermediaries."
"How can you be so sure?" Clara asked, her breathing shallow and rapid.
"Because if Julian’s people were outside, they would have broken in already or called the authorities with a fake tip. They want you terrified. Fear makes people surrender." Maya walked over to a secure terminal on the desk. "I’m going to run a trace on the IP address of the sender. But we need to move you to a secondary location tonight just to be safe. Protocol dictates we don't take chances with active surveillance threats."
Clara nodded slowly, trying to anchor herself. She walked back to the bedroom and gently picked up Leo. The little boy stirred, wrapping his arms around her neck and burying his face in her shoulder. "Mommy, are we going home?" he mumbled sleepily.

"No, sweetie, we're going on an adventure," Clara whispered, fighting back tears as she pulled a woolen blanket around him.
The security of the safe house had been compromised, not by brute force, but by the lingering, pervasive paranoia Julian instilled in them. As they packed their meager belongings into a single canvas duffel bag, Clara realized that escaping Julian Sterling wasn't just a matter of miles; it was a psychological deprogramming that would take a lifetime. They slipped out through the rear exit into the cool night air, leaving the safe house behind as the digital clock ticked toward midnight.
