Chapter 6: Healing the Wounds

The morning light painted the interior of the manor in warm, amber hues, far removed from the cold, sterile luxury of the previous era. In the expansive country kitchen, which had previously been off-limits to anyone bearing the family name, the air was filled with the rich aroma of brewing coffee, toasted bread, and scrambled eggs.
Jonathan stood by the large marble island, wearing a light gray apron over his dark blue polo shirt as he flipped pancakes with practiced ease. Maya and three other children sat around the rustic oak table, their eyes wide with wonder as they watched the golden-brown treats slide onto their plates. Gone were the oversized, stained white aprons; they now wore clean, brightly colored cotton clothes that Jonathan had had delivered the night before.
""Eat up,"" Jonathan said with a rare, softening smile that touched the corners of his eyes. ""You need your strength. Today, we are going to do something radical.""
Maya took a tentative bite of her pancake, her eyes lighting up. ""It's so good, Jonathan. Is this... is this really for us?""
""Every bit of it,"" Jonathan assured her, setting down the spatula. ""And nobody is ever going to take your plate away until you are completely full. Do you understand?""
The children nodded eagerly, the heavy trauma of their past service slowly beginning to melt away under the warmth of genuine care. For years, they had been treated as invisible, replaceable units of labor, expected to cater to ungrateful guests while surviving on scraps. Now, sitting in the heart of the very house that had enslaved them, they were finally treated like human beings.
While the children ate, a quiet knock echoed at the kitchen door. A middle-aged man in a neat gray suit stepped inside, carrying a thick leather briefcase. It was Thomas, Jonathan’s chief legal counsel and long-time associate.
""Good morning, boss,"" Thomas said, nodding respectfully to the children before turning to Jonathan. ""The preliminary audit of the estate's domestic accounts is complete. As you suspected, Arthur and Martha diverted nearly four million dollars from the children's charitable trust funds into offshore accounts over the past decade.""

Jonathan’s jaw tightened, a muscle ticking in his cheek. He set his coffee mug down on the counter with a quiet thud. ""Get the filings ready for immediate seizure. I want those funds recovered and placed into a newly established trust, fully managed by an independent board of social welfare auditors.""
""Already drafted,"" Thomas replied, tapping his briefcase. ""Furthermore, the local child protective services have been briefed. They are taking official statements this afternoon. Arthur and Martha are currently confined to the guest lodge at the edge of the property; they won't be bothering anyone here.""
