Chapter 10: Echoes of Grace

As autumn settled over the estate, painting the surrounding forests in brilliant shades of amber, crimson, and gold, the New Horizons Foundation held its very first public open house. Unlike the exclusive, superficial gatherings of Arthur’s era, this event was a warm, community-driven celebration. Local families, educators, and local civic leaders gathered on the stone patio to tour the newly renovated facilities and meet the children.
The patio, once the site of bitter cruelty and the cake catastrophe, was now adorned with cheerful autumn decorations, pumpkins, and long wooden picnic tables laden with home-baked goods prepared by the staff and children.
Maya, wearing a bright yellow sweater, walked proudly among the visitors, handing out information pamphlets about the foundation's educational programs. Her steps were confident, her head held high—a stark contrast to the frightened, weeping child who had clutched a heavy serving tray months earlier.
Jonathan stood near the edge of the patio, observing the scene with a quiet sense of peace. He wore his signature dark blue polo shirt and khaki pants, blending seamlessly into the background while keeping a watchful, protective eye over the courtyard.
Thomas, his legal counsel, walked up beside him holding a clipboard. ""Everything is running smoothly, boss. The final property transfer titles were filed this morning. The foundation is officially and permanently endowed.""
""Good,"" Jonathan said quietly, watching Maya laugh as she explained her treehouse drawing to a group of visiting teachers. ""That means my work here as an administrator is done.""

Thomas frowned, turning to look at him sharply. ""Done? What do you mean? You built this place. The kids look up to you as a father figure.""
""Which is precisely why I need to step back,"" Jonathan explained, his voice steady. ""A sanctuary shouldn't be guarded by a ghost of vengeance. It needs to stand on its own, guided by educators, healers, and people who know how to build a future without looking backward.""
