Chapter 9: Breaking and Entering

The heavy service door of the mansion gave way with a muffled metallic crunch as Marcus applied a localized pneumatic wedge to the electronic latch. The door swung inward, revealing a dimly lit concrete corridor that smelled faintly of laundry detergent and damp earth. Richard stepped through first, his compact sidearm raised in a low, defensive ready position, his eyes scanning the shadows with the practiced fluidity of a veteran operative. Marcus followed closely behind, carrying a secondary kit containing heavy-duty breaching tools and a localized signal jammer.

The interior of the mansion was eerily quiet, save for the low, rhythmic hum of the emergency generators vibrating through the floorboards. Upstairs, muffled shouts and the sound of breaking glass indicated that the chaos in the main study had only intensified. Julian Sterling was losing control of his domain, and his private security force was disintegrating under the double pressure of digital ruin and physical intrusion.

Richard led the way down the service corridor, past the commercial kitchens and up a narrow, winding staircase that led directly to the back of the west wing, bypassing the grand marble foyer entirely. They reached a heavy oak door reinforced with a digital keypad—the private entrance to Julian’s underground vault and study.

"Jam the frequency," Richard whispered, gesturing toward the keypad.

Marcus clipped a small, puck-shaped device directly over the keypad's sensor array. A soft click echoed through the hallway as the electronic lock bypassed its security protocol and flashed green. Richard pushed the door open, stepping into the darkened, spacious study. The room was a disaster area. Crystal shards littered the Persian rug, expensive books lay scattered across the floor, and the mahogany desk was buried beneath piles of frantically discarded paperwork.

And standing by the shattered French doors leading out to the garden terrace was Julian Sterling himself.

Julian spun around at the sound of the door opening. In his hand, he held a sleek, silver-plated revolver, his knuckles white, his eyes wide and bloodshot with desperate rage. He stared at Richard, the man he had tried to erase a decade ago, standing before him in the flesh.

"You," Julian breathed, his voice trembling as he raised the weapon. "You absolute bastard."

Richard didn't flinch. He lowered his sidearm slightly, meeting Julian's frantic gaze with cold, absolute authority. "Put the gun down, Julian. It’s over."
