Chapter 10: The Last Stand in the Study

Julian’s hand shook violently as he aimed the silver-plated revolver squarely at Richard’s chest. The flickering yellow light from the emergency generator cast harsh shadows across his sweating face, accentuating the lines of panic and ruined pride etched deep into his features. For fifty years, Julian Sterling had believed that power was an immutable law of nature, something inherited, bought, and defended with absolute impunity. To see it stripped away in a matter of hours by a man he had deemed a dead peasant was a reality his mind violently rejected.
"Over?" Julian laughed, a shrill, hysterical sound that echoed off the mahogany bookshelves. "You think because your little digital ghost froze my bank accounts that I'm finished? I built this town brick by brick, law by law, body by body! The governor owes me favors you can't even fathom. The federal judges play golf on my course!"
"And all of them received the encrypted DOJ dossier thirty minutes ago," Richard replied calmly, taking a slow, deliberate step forward. "Your judges are currently shredding their calendars, Julian. Your governor is drafting a public distance statement. You are entirely alone."
"I am never alone!" Julian shrieked, his finger tightening against the trigger. "And even if I am, I am taking you and that bruised daughter of yours straight to hell with me!"
Before Julian could complete the motion, Marcus moved with blinding speed from the doorway. She didn't draw a weapon; instead, she kicked the edge of the heavy mahogany desk with all her force. The massive piece of furniture slammed forward into Julian's legs, throwing him off balance. The silver-plated revolver discharged into the ceiling, showering plaster dust down onto the Persian rug as Julian stumbled backward, crashing heavily against the glass display case.
Richard was across the room in an instant. He grabbed Julian by the collar of his ruined silk shirt, hoisting him up with effortless strength and slamming him back against the wooden bookcase. The stack of leather-bound ledgers toppled from the shelf, crashing to the floor around them. Richard pressed his forearm firmly against Julian's chest, pinning him in place while keeping his eyes locked on the fallen man's terror-stricken face.
"Where is the physical ledger, Julian?" Richard demanded, his voice dropping to a low, menacing growl that brooked no resistance. "The hard copy. The master records."
Julian gasped for air, his face turning purple against the pressure of Richard's arm. He pointed a trembling, manicured finger toward the base of the grand fireplace on the far side of the study. "Behind... behind the iron grate," Julian choked out. "The key is in my pocket."

Marcus moved to the fireplace, kneeling beside the heavy wrought-iron screen. With a sharp tug, she swung the grate open, revealing a hidden floor safe built deep into the hearth stone.
