Chapter 14: Leaving the Grand Continental

The morning sun washed through the tall arched windows of the Grand Continental lobby, bathing the polished white marble floor and the floral arrangements in a brilliant, welcoming glow. Ethan walked toward the front reception desk, carrying their canvas backpack over one shoulder while holding Lily securely by the hand. Lily wore her bright pink sweater, skipping lightly beside him, swinging her stuffed rabbit in her free hand and chatting happily about the storybook Martha had given her.
Clara looked up from her computer screen as they approached the counter, a warm, professional smile touching her lips. The emotional tension that had filled the lobby during their arrival days ago was completely gone, replaced by the quiet dignity of a journey successfully completed.
"Checking out, Mr. Vance?" Clara asked smoothly, her fingers resting lightly on the keyboard.
"Checking out," Ethan confirmed, his voice calm, steady, and filled with a quiet confidence. "Everything is settled."
Clara processed the final paperwork with practiced efficiency, printing out a neat folio and sliding it across the mahogany counter. "We hope your stay here provided the sanctuary you needed, Mr. Vance."
"It did," Ethan said sincerely. "More than you know."
Martha appeared from the side corridor, carrying her customary stack of white towels, but she paused when she saw them standing at the desk. She walked over, kneeling down to be at eye-level with Lily.
"Did you enjoy the book, sweetie?" Martha asked gently.
Lily nodded enthusiastically, holding up the hardcover storybook. "I read the whole first chapter with Daddy last night! Thank you, Mrs. Martha."
Martha smiled, standing up and meeting Ethan’s gaze. There was an unspoken understanding passing between them—a recognition of the invisible threads of history, family, and survival that had intersected within the walls of this grand old hotel.
"Safe travels back home, Ethan," Martha said softly.
"Thank you, Martha," Ethan replied.

With a final nod to Clara and Martha, Ethan turned away from the reception desk. Holding Lily's hand tightly in his, he walked across the gleaming marble lobby toward the massive glass front doors.
