Chapter 13: The Final Evening

The final evening in Suite 904 was peaceful. The city outside hummed with its usual nocturnal energy, but inside the luxury room, time seemed to slow down to a gentle crawl. Ethan had packed their canvas backpack and the single suitcase, placing them neatly by the entryway. Everything was ready for their departure the following morning.
Lily was curled up under the heavy duvet in the bedroom alcove, fast asleep, clutching her stuffed rabbit in one arm and the storybook Martha had given her resting against her chest. The bedside lamp cast a soft, amber glow across her face, highlighting the absolute peace she had finally found after weeks of uncertainty and fear.
Ethan stood by the tall arched windows, looking out at the glittering lights of the metropolis below. The heavy burden that had weighed upon his shoulders for years felt significantly lighter, lifted not just by the financial resolution of the trust fund, but by the emotional reconciliation with his past. He had stopped running away from his mistakes and had finally started facing them head-on, reclaiming his dignity as a father and a man.
He walked over to the nightstand where the bouquet of red roses sat. The stems were dry now, and most of the deep red petals had fallen onto the white wood surface, curling inward as they reached the end of their lifecycle. Ethan carefully gathered the fallen petals in his hands, walking over to the wastebasket to dispose of them, leaving just three sturdy stems in the glass vase.
His phone buzzed softly in his pocket. He pulled it out and saw a text message from Marcus: Landed safely. Checked the shop inventory. We're opening the doors on Monday. Come home whenever you're ready.
Ethan stared at the screen for a long moment, reading the words over and over again. There was no anger left in his heart, only a quiet, resolute acceptance. He typed a short reply: See you Monday. He hit send, locked the phone, and slipped it back into his pocket.

He walked over to the bed, gently pulling the blanket up higher around Lily's shoulders, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her forehead. She stirred slightly, murmuring something unintelligible in her sleep before settling back into a deep, untroubled slumber. Ethan pulled a chair up beside the bed, sat down, and closed his eyes, finally allowing himself to rest without fear of what tomorrow might bring.
