Chapter 15

The morning sun rose over the Kentucky hills, washing the property in a warm, golden light that melted away the chill of the previous night. The police cruisers were long gone, replaced by a pair of state investigators and a team of county surveyors who were carefully unearthing the digital time capsule from beneath the soil near the old drainage pipe. The work was slow, methodical, and entirely transparent, carried out under the clear light of day rather than the cover of shadows.

Martha sat on the front porch with a cup of hot coffee, watching the activity with a deep, settling sense of peace. Her gray sneakers rested comfortably on the wooden boards, and her hands, free of gardening gloves, held the mug in a relaxed grip. The large yellow-handled hedge clippers leaned quietly against the wall behind her, their job finally finished.

David sat in the rocking chair beside her, wrapped in his flannel shirt, sipping his coffee while looking out at the open yard. His eyes were clear and calm, the lingering fog of his memory lifted just enough for him to appreciate the quiet morning beside his wife.

Julian walked up the porch steps, carrying a small cardboard box containing the recovered flash drive and his father’s leather journal. He stopped in front of them, looking tired but at peace. The server racks in the workshop had been dismantled, and the security camera under the eaves had been powered down permanently.

"The state police have taken official custody of the files," Julian said, his voice steady and warm. "The old developers are already being brought in for questioning. It's really over, Martha."

Martha looked up at him, offering a gentle, genuine smile. "Are you staying in town, Julian?"
