Chapter 8 - The Terminal Detention

Back on the ground at JFK, the chaos of Terminal 4 was reaching its evening peak, but for Elena and David Miller, the bustling crowds might as well have been ghosts. They stood near the Delta service desk, their faces pale and sweating under the harsh fluorescent lights, surrounded by two exhausted, crying children who were refusing to cooperate.

“What do you mean, our return tickets are invalid?” Elena screamed at the young airline supervisor behind the counter, her voice cracking with pure hysteria. “We are platinum medallion members! We flew in on these exact itineraries this morning!”

The supervisor, a weary man with thinning gray hair, kept his expression professionally neutral while staring at his terminal screen.

“Ma'am, according to the reservation notes updated thirty minutes ago by the primary account holder, all return segments associated with this corporate profile were canceled and refunded to the source account,” the supervisor explained calmly, refusing to be baited. “Furthermore, your primary credit profiles have triggered a security hold. The system will not allow a ticketing transaction using those credentials.”

David stepped forward, shoving his phone into the supervisor’s face, displaying a banking app screen that showed multiple frozen red error banners.

“This is a mistake! Look at my corporate card! Call the issuer right now!” David demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and mounting panic. “My name is tied directly to the Miller Foundation holdings!”

“Sir, I cannot override a Tier-1 asset freeze,” the supervisor said firmly, stepping back slightly as David lunged forward. “You’ll need to contact your financial institution’s fraud department. Next customer, please.”

Elena grabbed her husband’s arm, her brown coat twisting around her waist as she spun him away from the counter. Her eyes were wide with terror, the reality of their situation finally crashing through her denial.

“David, what did you do?” she whispered fiercely, gripping his lapel. “Why are your cards frozen? Why did our return tickets disappear?”

“It’s Clara,” David muttered, running a hand through his thinning hair, leaving it standing in frantic tufts. “She... she must have locked down the corporate treasury accounts the moment we left the gate. She found out about the Vanguard transfers.”

“The transfers?” Elena gasped, her voice dropping to a horrified hiss. “What transfers, David? What did you do with the foundation money?”

Before David could stutter out a defensive excuse, two airport security officers in dark uniforms materialized on either side of them, their expressions grim and unyielding.

“Mr. David Miller?” the lead officer asked, holding a digital tablet in his hand.

David swallowed hard, his throat dry as bone. “Yes? Who’s asking?”

“We have an urgent notification from local precinct authorities regarding an attempted property trespass at a Mercer Street residential address,” the officer stated clearly, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt. “You need to come with us for questioning immediately.”

Elena let out a sharp, piercing shriek that echoed off the terminal walls, drawing the startled gazes of hundreds of waiting travelers as the cold steel cuffs snapped onto her husband’s wrists.
