Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

Before David could formulate a response, his own phone buzzed violently in his palm. He glanced down at the screen, and the color drained rapidly from his face, leaving a sickly gray pallor that made him look suddenly old.

“What is it?” Elena asked, turning sharply toward her husband, sensing the sudden shift in his demeanor.

David didn’t answer right away. He tapped frantically on his screen, his fingers trembling as he tried to open a corporate portal that had apparently just slammed shut in his face.

“The Mercer property management account,” David choked out, his voice cracking slightly. “It’s... it’s been locked out. All administrative privileges have been revoked by Vance & Associates.”

Elena spun back to face Clara, her mouth opening and closing soundlessly for a moment before she found her voice.

“What did you do?” she demanded, grabbing Clara by the forearm.

Clara looked down at her daughter’s hand, her expression completely neutral, until Elena instinctively pulled back, chastised by the cold authority in her mother-in-law’s eyes.

“Your party’s reservation has changed,” Clara said, echoing the exact phrase she had used moments earlier on the phone, though the meaning had now shifted entirely.

“You can’t just cut us out of the corporate holdings!” David shouted, finally losing his composure, taking a step forward that caused a nearby airport security officer to shift his weight and eye them closely. “We have equity in those developments! My firm engineered the zoning approvals for the downtown plaza!”

“Your firm was paid an exorbitant retainer for those approvals,” Clara replied evenly, picking up her rolling luggage by the retractable handle. “A retainer that I personally funded from my personal capital. Every single contract you signed with my signature as secondary guarantor is currently being audited by a forensic team.”

The two children, sensing the escalating hostility, began to whimper, tugging on Elena’s brown coat. Elena knelt down automatically, trying to soothe them, but her eyes remained locked on Clara with a mixture of sheer panic and burning hatred.

“You’re destroying our lives,” Elena hissed, tears of genuine frustration finally pricking her eyes. “Over what? Because we wanted you to spend a weekend with your family instead of staring at spreadsheets?”

“No, Elena,” Clara said softly, her voice carrying a profound, sorrowful weight. “I am destroying your illusion that you can treat me like a ghost while I am still very much alive.”

She turned her rolling luggage toward the boarding lane, where the agent was just announcing the final boarding call for Flight 412 to Geneva.

“Wait,” David said, his voice dropping to a desperate plea as he realized the full financial catastrophe unfolding on his smartphone screen. “Mom... let’s just sit down. Let’s talk about this like reasonable adults. We can fix whatever misunderstanding—”

“There is no misunderstanding, David,” Clara said without turning back. “There is only the bill coming due.”
