Chapter 12 - Breach and Clear

The acrid smell of high explosives and burnt powder flooded the interrogation room as the heavy oak door collapsed inward. Shards of splintered wood rained down across the scarred oak table, clattering against the metal chairs. Through the billowing gray smoke, heavy silhouettes of armed tactical operatives poured into the confined space, their automatic rifles raised, laser sights painting crimson arcs across the walls.

“Stay down! Security protocol omega! Do not move!” the lead operative bellowed, his voice distorted by a heavy tactical gas mask.

Before the lead operative could acquire his target, Elena Vance moved with terrifying, fluid speed. She dropped low to the concrete floor, swept her leg in a violent arc, and kicked the legs out from under the closest operative. He crashed hard onto the concrete, his rifle skidding across the room. In the same motion, Elena seized his tactical vest, pulled him down as a human shield, and drew her concealed combat knife with blinding swiftness.

“Hold fire! Hold fire!” Colonel Sterling screamed, scrambling backward out of his chair, pressing his spine flat against the cold concrete wall, his hands raised frantically in surrender. “I am Colonel Sterling! Division Intelligence! Stand down!”

The incoming strike team hesitated for a fraction of a second—a fatal hesitation when fighting someone trained in the darkest corners of the black-ops apparatus.

General Hawthorne didn't cower. He stood his ground beside the overturned table, his eyes locked onto the squad leader with absolute disdain. “You’re three minutes too late, captain,” Hawthorne barked, his voice cutting through the ringing in their ears. “The data packet is already public. Killing us won't bury the truth; it will only confirm it.”

The squad leader lowered his rifle slightly, glancing between the General and the encrypted data drive still resting on the table. Through the tinted visor of his mask, his eyes betrayed deep panic. “Our orders were direct, General. Secure the site. Eliminate all unauthorized personnel.”

“Whose orders?” Elena asked softly from the floor, her knife pressed lightly against the throat of the pinned operative beneath her. “Sterling’s? Or the Director’s?”

The operative didn't answer. He struggled beneath her weight, but Elena’s leverage was absolute, her posture unbreakable.

Master Sergeant Vance cowered in the corner, clutching his knees to his chest, whispering incoherently to himself as the chaos unfolded around him. The man who had once ruled the training grounds of Fort Avalon with absolute cruelty had been reduced to a frightened animal, terrified of his own shadow.

“Listen to me, Captain,” Hawthorne said, stepping forward until the barrel of the squad leader’s rifle was mere inches from his chest. “If you pull that trigger, you become the final scapegoat in a dying regime. Drop your weapons, secure the perimeter, and wait for the civilian investigators to arrive.”

The squad leader stood frozen, the tension in the room stretching until it felt like a tightly wound wire ready to snap. The red emergency strips pulsed against the concrete, painting the entire scene in a wash of arterial crimson.

Suddenly, the heavy base-wide PA system crackled to life. A cold, synthetic voice echoed through the corridors of Fort Avalon:

“Attention all units. Fort Avalon is now under federal civilian custody. The Department of Justice has assumed command. All military personnel are ordered to lay down their weapons immediately.”

The squad leader’s rifle slowly drifted downward. He looked at Colonel Sterling, who had slumped into a chair, completely defeated.

Elena slowly stood up, letting the stunned operative scramble away into the shadows. She slipped her knife back into its sheath, her breathing remaining slow and steady, utterly unfazed by the storm she had unleashed.

“Game over, Colonel,” Elena whispered.
