Chapter 1 - The First Blood in the Mud

The thick smell of wet earth and rusted iron hung heavy over the training grounds of Fort Avalon. The rain had stopped hours ago, leaving behind a slick, treacherous morass that sucked at the heavy military boots of every recruit standing in the formation. Elena Vance stood near the center, her dark hair pulled back into a tight, merciless bun that defied the damp air. Her camouflage uniform was already splattered with dark mud, but her posture remained a rigid monument of discipline.

A few feet away, Master Sergeant Vance—no relation, a brutal coincidence of nomenclature that the instructor loved to mock—loomed like a bruised mountain. His bald head glistened with sweat, and his thick neck pulsed with veins as he unzipped his jacket with aggressive, theatrical slowness.

“You think a recruit like you belongs here?” the instructor barked, his voice cutting through the damp wind like a rusted blade. He stepped directly into her personal space, his sneer exposing yellowed teeth.

Elena did not blink. Her breathing remained painfully slow, measured to the rhythm of a sniper at rest. “I belong wherever I am assigned, Sergeant,” she replied, her voice dangerously flat.

“Assigned?” The instructor let out a harsh, barking laugh that drew uneasy glances from the surrounding recruits. “You’re nothing. A ghost pushing paper who somehow slipped through the cracks of Command. I’ll break you before lunch.”

“Try it,” Elena whispered, her micro-expressions entirely devoid of fear.

The instructor threw a heavy, unregulated right hook aimed straight at her jaw. It was a punch born of street brawls and unchecked ego. Elena didn't flinch; she ducked under the arc with lethal precision, parried his secondary grab, and executed a blindingly fast sweep that utilized his own momentum against him. With a dull thud, the muscular tyrant crashed flat onto his back in the thick mud.

The surrounding recruits gasped in unison, their eyes widening in sheer disbelief. Up on the observation deck, General Hawthorne leaned forward, his hands resting on the rusted railing, his formal green uniform immaculate against the backdrop of ruin. The instructor struggled up to his knees, spitting brown water and glaring up with unbridled fury.

“Who are you?” the instructor choked out, his voice breathless and cracked with humiliation.

Elena slowly rolled up her right sleeve, revealing a pale, jagged scar that wound around her forearm like a sleeping serpent. “Just a recruit,” she said calmly.

Hawthorne turned his head slowly, whispering something to his adjutant that made the younger officer pale instantly.
