Chapter 9

Back at the Vance estate, the forensic accounting team was unearthing a labyrinth of corporate deception that extended far beyond family inheritance disputes. Investigators had finally cracked the encrypted server housed in Arthur’s basement office, revealing a complex network of offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands and Panama. Sarah had stumbled upon this digital paper trail weeks before her death, realizing that Arthur was not only embezzling from the family trust fund intended for Lily’s future, but was also using company funds to cover massive personal debts accumulated through reckless high-stakes investments. Detective Jenkins reviewed the financial summaries laid out across the grand mahogany dining table, shaking her head at the sheer audacity of the numbers. Millions of dollars had been funneled through defunct shell corporations, leaving thousands of unsuspecting investors and employees facing financial ruin if the scandal broke publicly. Beatrice Vance, now confined to her upstairs bedroom under house arrest pending arraignment, could hear the muffled sounds of federal agents cataloging her family's ill-gotten legacy downstairs. Her world was shrinking by the hour, reduced from sprawling society galas and charitable boards to the four sterile walls of a room decorated with memories of a dynasty built on sand. Clara, who had returned briefly to the estate with a police escort to collect Lily’s remaining clothes and personal items, stood in the grand foyer watching the investigators pack up box after box of evidence. She felt no triumph, only a deep, hollow sadness for her sister Sarah, who had fought this lonely battle in secret to protect her daughter. "It’s all going to come crashing down," Clara murmured to Detective Jenkins as the officer walked past with a stack of ledger books. Jenkins paused, adjusting her jacket. "It already has, Ms. Vance. Greed always leaves a trail; people like Arthur just assume nobody will ever bother to follow it." Clara looked up at the sweeping staircase where portraits of generations of stern-faced Vances hung in gilded frames, knowing that their reign of intimidation was finally, permanently extinguished.
