Chapter 5

The transition from respectable grieving relative to criminal suspect happened with dizzying speed. Officer Miller snapped the steel handcuffs around Arthur’s wrists with practiced efficiency, the sharp click of the ratchets echoing loudly off the vaulted stone ceiling. Arthur’s face flushed a deep, mottled crimson, his mouth working silently for a moment before he found his voice. "This is an outrage! You're making a catastrophic mistake!" he barked, straining against the restraint while trying to maintain some shred of his former dignity. "My lawyers will dismantle this department piece by piece before the sun sets!" But his threats lacked their usual poison; the recorded confession played moments earlier had effectively stripped him of his armor. Officer Torres took Arthur by the elbow, guiding him firmly down the central aisle, away from the white casket and toward the heavy oak doors that led to the squad car waiting in the rain. As Arthur passed the rows of empty pews, he cast one venomous glare toward little Lily, but the girl simply stared back with an unsettling, adult calm that made him shudder. Beatrice remained collapsed against the wooden pew, her burgundy shawl slipping from her frail shoulders to pool on the dusty floor like a puddle of dried blood. She made no move to follow her son, suddenly acutely aware that her own complicity in the corporate cover-up would soon come under intense scrutiny by the investigators. Miller lingered behind for a brief moment, addressing the remaining handful of bewildered mourners before turning his attention back to the child. "You're a very brave young lady, Lily," Miller said softly, his voice losing its official hardness. "Do you have somewhere safe you can go while we sort all of this out?" Lily nodded slowly, lifting the teddy bear back into her arms and tucking the empty pocket down. "Aunt Clara is coming from Chicago," Lily replied, her voice steady and clear. "She's already at the airport." Miller gave an approving nod, gently guiding her away from the grim altar toward the relative safety of the vestry, where social services and family support awaited. Outside, the wail of sirens pierced the gray afternoon, signaling the definitive end of the Vance family's untouchable reign over the city's financial elite.
