Chapter 5

By late afternoon, the heavy iron gates of the Zhou family estate stood wide open as a fleet of moving trucks and federal seizure vans blocked the circular driveway. Inside the sprawling, opulent living room where Elena had endured three years of silent humiliation, Madam Zhou paced frantically across the Persian rug. Her grey updo was slightly unraveled, and her posture lacked its usual imposing authority. Vincent slumped heavily into an antique velvet armchair, his phone buzzing incessantly with calls from panicked investors, nervous board members, and angry creditors demanding immediate explanations for the sudden freezing of all corporate accounts. The empire they had built on deceit was disintegrating before their eyes, and they were completely powerless to stop the bleeding.
The heavy front doors swung open, and footsteps echoed across the marble foyer. Elena walked into the living room, flanked by two legal representatives and a private security guard. She had changed into a tailored charcoal pantsuit, her posture immaculate and her expression entirely devoid of malice. The red scratches and bruises on her face were still faintly visible beneath a light layer of professional makeup, serving as stark reminders of the violence Madam Zhou had unleashed just twenty-four hours earlier. Vincent jumped to his feet, his face contorted in rage as he started to lunge toward her, screaming insults about betrayal and ingratitude. The private security guard stepped forward smoothly, placing a firm hand on Vincent’s chest and pushing him back into the armchair with effortless authority.

Madam Zhou raised a hand to silence her son, her dark eyes narrowing as she fixed her gaze on Elena. She demanded to know what Elena wanted in exchange for calling off the federal investigations and releasing enough funds to keep the company from filing immediate bankruptcy. Elena walked slowly over to the grand piano, running a slender finger across the polished mahogany surface where she had once been forced to play background music for their shallow society guests. She turned to face the older woman, her voice calm, clear, and utterly devoid of hesitation. She did not want a cash settlement, nor did she care about their remaining real estate portfolio. She wanted the unconditional public surrender of the Zhou family name, the return of the stolen Vance family patents, and a signed confession detailing the financial crimes they had committed a decade ago.
