Chapter 3

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting a harsh, unforgiving light across the glass and steel facade of Zhou Global Enterprises. Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension and the rich aroma of imported espresso. Madam Zhou sat at the head of the mahogany conference table, her grey updo immaculate, though a subtle twitch near her left eye betrayed her lingering agitation from the previous night's public fiasco. To her right, Vincent sat rubbing his bruised lower back, still wincing from his undignified crash into the champagne cart. He wore a fresh burgundy suit, but his usual cocky arrogance was replaced by a sour, defensive scowl. They were waiting for their chief financial officer to deliver the quarterly audit projections, expecting another routine celebration of record-breaking corporate revenue.

The heavy double doors swung open, but it was not the CFO who walked into the boardroom. It was Marcus, accompanied by two federal marshals and a senior investigator from the Securities and Exchange Commission. Madam Zhou rose immediately to her feet, her face flushing with indignant fury as she demanded to know the meaning of this blatant intrusion into a private corporate sanctuary. Vincent stood up beside her, puffing out his chest and threatening immediate legal retaliation against the federal agents. Marcus did not flinch. He simply placed a thick leather-bound dossier squarely in the center of the mahogany table, right in front of Madam Zhou’s immaculate hands. The dossier bore the official seal of the federal district court, along with a sweeping set of emergency asset seizure warrants signed by a federal judge only an hour earlier.

Vincent sneered, leaning over the table to slap his hand down next to the dossier, demanding to know who authorized this nonsense. Marcus looked him dead in the eye with a thin, humorless smile. He informed them that the primary shareholder and controlling equity partner of Zhou Global Enterprises had executed a legal restructuring overnight, transferring all voting rights and liquid reserves away from the executive board. Madam Zhou’s breath caught in her throat as she demanded the name of this mysterious majority shareholder who possessed the legal leverage to dismantle their empire with a single signature. Marcus calmly opened the first page of the dossier, revealing a crisp, notarized signature that made the color drain entirely from Madam Zhou’s face. The name at the top of the document was not an anonymous corporate entity, nor a rival conglomerate. It was Elena Vance.
