Chapter 8

In the sterile confines of the motel room, Mark was processing the magnitude of Evelyn’s confession. The legal documents he had brought suddenly took on an entirely different, more sinister meaning. If Vance’s estate executors were auditing old trusts, they weren't just looking to reclaim a residential property; they were digging up an old corporate scandal that could implicate prominent figures still active in the city's political landscape.
"If Vance’s estate is auditing the trust now," Mark said, his analytical mind racing through the implications, "that means the legal loophole Clara used to evict you—it wasn't a standard foreclosure. It was triggered by someone within Vance’s current corporate structure. Someone is trying to clear the title before a public land auction."
Evelyn nodded, pouring two cups of instant coffee from the small electric kettle on the desk. She handed one to Mark, her hands steady now that the truth was out in the open. "Vance’s grandson, Julian Vance, took over the corporate holdings three years ago. He’s been systematically liquidating all legacy assets tied to his grandfather’s private deals. When he discovered our house was still occupied under a perpetual lease agreement, his legal team initiated the maneuver that Clara unknowingly signed off on."
"Clara didn't find those papers by accident, did she?" Mark asked, a sudden realization dawning on him. "Someone fed her that information. Someone wanted her to act as the catalyst to get you out of the house so they could seize the property without dealing with our tenant rights."

"Julian Vance knew I wouldn't leave voluntarily if I knew his legal team was behind it," Evelyn said, sipping her coffee. "So he funneled the documents to an independent title researcher who conveniently reached out to Clara, framing it as a forgotten inheritance she was rightfully owed. She thought she was reclaiming her legacy; she was actually serving an eviction notice on behalf of the very man who destroyed her father."
Mark set his coffee cup down with a sharp clatter, standing up from the armchair. "We need to stop her. If Julian Vance gets clear title to that property within forty-eight hours, he’ll demolish the house and bury the physical evidence of Thomas’s wrongful framing forever."
